Default 2004.5; does anyone know when

the switch was made from 2004 to 2004.5? Is there really such a thing as a 2004.5, or is that a tag we placed on them when some of the obvious changes became available (knee pads, etc)? Are there before and after serial #'s?

Thanks.

It was supposedly starting in January of 2004. If you have the knee pads you should have the 2004.5

The only way I know of that you can tell is by the VIN numbers:

2004 Nissan 350Z Coupe/Roadster (Coupe VINs up to D*4T160000,E*4T060000) (Roadster VINs from D*4T102001 to D*4T110000 & from A*4T002001 to A*4T010000)

2004.5 Nissan 350Z Coupe/Roadster (Coupe VINs from D*4T160001, E*4T060001) ( Roadster VINs from D*4T110001, A*4T010001)

Oh, sorry. No, I haven't switched, yet. Am considering it though. My Enth has been great. I have only one complaint and that is the seating positions available. I weigh about 250 and am about 6' tall. However, I have relatively short arms and legs. I can't find a good seating position which doesn't make my old back hurt after only a few miles.

I plan to begin taking a few trips in it and am a little concerned. It all depends on the deal I can make. Mine is red and my local dealer has two z's in stock, both identical red Touring models.

Interesting point some of you might be interested in. One of two has a printed addendum to the window sticker. It is a short paragraph in small print right in the middle of the sticker. Paraphrased, it says "This vehicle's transmission (6 Spd) was replace with a new Nissan transmission by Nissan prior to delivery to the dealer." It was the older of the two vehicles.

Thanks, that probably tells me what I need to know. Appreciate it.

A lot of people have complained about back pain on long trips. Most felt it was due to no lower lumbar support in the seats. Somebody found these great little "back savers":

You might want to consider that.

I've ridden in both the 03 and 04's and there's not much difference to the seating so switching may not help your comfort. You can consider upgrading to a Touring model as it has power seats which may offer more flexibility in positions.

Thanks, I appreciate the lumbar advice. I'll check it out.

Actually, I have an 04 Enth and am considering the Touring for the power seat.

Your VIN is probably JN1AZ34D44T163251. You've just misread the "D" as an "O". The pertinent info is in the last 6 digits. These are production numbers. Looks like you would be 3,251 into the 2004.5 series. I think.

Mine happens to be 152793; out of luck.

So is this 2004.5 thing a legitimate model year from Nissan, or just something Z owners made up, so they can act all cool knowing their car is newer than an early release 2004 model?

It's been a while, but that last time I was at the dealer it said "2004 Nissan 350Z" on the sticker.
