I hate to remind you guys, and Gals, but winter is not that far away.
What is the best way to store the Z for the winter?

Ha! this is why I love Socal. the ONLY reason why.

Winter storage, Sheesh. This is the season in which the Z would be the most fun to drive.

 

Yep, I'm with you on that Zectesy. I'm in the process of looking right now. Cause you'll spend alot more than that in buying winter tires. Plus if you want to, you can donate the car after winter is over and claim it on your taxes.

 

1. In a garage of course.

2. Make the sure the gas tank is full. Pour a bottle of fuel stabalizer in the tank.

3. Take the battery out or connect it to a battery maintainer.

4. Put some carpet under the tires to keep them off the cement floor.

Hope this helps, I have done this about 10 times with my cars, once with my Z, and not one problem.

Also don't forget to drop some of your insurance coverage if your bank allows it. GL!

Good advice- except for the fuel stabilizer part. That stuff is mostly for small, unsophisticated single cylinder engines. You won't find it as an approved additive by Nissan.

I stored last winter. Topped off the fuel, connected to a battery maintainer/desulphator and drove up onto 4 pieces of blueboard insulation. Cranked the key and after 4 months, she started like she was running 5 minutes before.

 

I used Stabyl for two winters and then found all kinds of documentation with respect to not using it. Had I have kept my Z I would have also done all Zand02max mentioned except the Stabyl and I put mine up on blocks and remove the tires.

Thankfully up here in NJ the winters are not that bad whereby there is always snow. I'll be taking out the Z for a run every few weeks in winter when there are no snow on the ground.

I'm with you....VA winters are hit and miss. When the roads are dry (and relatively clear of sand), I will take 'er out of the garage for a spin. I'm curious, what is the carpet/foam under the tires recommended for?

 

Just put it up on jack stands.

 

Yeah, but I don't want to have to take it down off of jack stands to drive it every week or two. Doesn't make sense to me.

Not good to leave the tires parked in one spot on concrete for too long- they can flat spot.
Also not advisable to leave the car on jack stands with the suspension dead. It will also get used to a lack of weight. Now, you might raise the car a small amount to lessen the weight, but completely jacking it up will make you a candidate for a new suspension over time...hey...maybe that's just the excuse I need!!!!

 

So how would carpet or foam change this? It's still going to be flat, isn't it?

Radials aren't supposed to flat-spot but at >$200 per, why take a chance. Boosting the tires up to max psi (50) and letting them compress into a softer material also insulates them from cold concrete.

 

Haven't ever had to do it, but I'd imagine that driving the Z in any type of snow or ice would be relatively terrifying. I wouldn't want to do it, what with the 4 tobogans that the car sits on.

Additionally, if you live in an area where they salt the roads, why expose your Z to it if you don't have to. Salt eats cars.

When there is snow on the road, my car will be in the garage...Period.

 

With blizzaks it is manageable. Here in the Twin Cities there were approx. 5 days last winter that I did not take out.
Undercoating technology and good paint protectant as well as keeping car washed regularly negates any salt issues.

My SB Z has been thru one Minnesota winter, and looks as new as the day I bought it.

My philosophy, is if I am going own a great car like the Z, I am going to use it.

Years ago, one of the car club members who owned a tire store also told me to keep tires off concrete when the tires are stored for the winter. That was an advice for 4 tires taken off the car. I think the concrete reacts with the rubber over a long period or something. I have been doing it since. I use cardboard, wood, carpet, or whatever I can find. Just make sure it is flat.
Instead of spending the money on a good set of winter tires for the Z, I opt for a winter car and store mine too. I don't even drive it if I know it's gonna rain, let alone snow, salt, sand w/ rocks, and scary drivers.
