Default Test Drive

As a former owner of a 240Z I am glad to see that Nissan has brought the Z back.
I have one question: Yesterday I test drove a base model with the 6 speed manual shifter. I was surprized at how much vibration could be felt through the shifter. At idle, (not in gear)during accelleration or just cruising. I have read about how smooth the engine and drivetrain are, but this didnt seem so smooth.
Was this a lemon or is this normal? Is the automatic better?
Appreciate any info as I am about to purchase one in a couple of months.

i think it is normal for the z to be that way... there was a write up when the z first came out.

motor trend noted,
"Key the engine to life, and you'll detect a little texture that gets past the liquid-filled front engine mounts."

The stock shifter weighs about 3 pounds. I changed mine out for a Nismo aluminum shift ****, and while you'd think you'd notice the vibration more without the big 3 pound damper on the shift lever, I actually notice it less. The shorter shift moment actually makes shifting better, too!

I guess the degree of “vibration” is relative. I don’t consider it excessive or “bad”. Compared to my Honda Civic, yes, there is more vibration in the Z. But comparing a Civic to a Z is like comparing a F-16 to a 747.

I guess the best way to determine if it is excessive is to test drive another Z and compare.

And, BTW, 6 speed is the ONLY way to go. Don’t even consider an auto!

This was actually a design feature for the Z. The specs called for bushings that would normally aid in dampening the vibration to beleft out on purpose to make the driver feel more "connected" to the drive train.
