Actually, it became a feature on the C5s and the LS1 F bodies. It was a real PITA, so tons of people bought a skip shift eliminator, which ended up being a 3 dollar fuse to bypass the whole thing (I had one on my SS back in the day).
the RPMs should be correct for the gear selected. you do not have to go in order. how well you shift is much more inportant than what gear you select. nothing else matters. if that doesn't make sense or is too complicated, trade for an auto.
I go 1-3-5 a lot but mainly because i'm lazy. I don't do it at extremely low rpms to cause bogging or anything like that. besides that would defeat the purpose of higher mpg

I seem to always have trouble starting in 2nd - it always tends to "grab" for me - so always use 1 , but is very smooth to 3 then to 5 - and on to 6 if going very far ,then downshifting is usually slowing down to about 45, then into 5th , the 3rd - which will allow me to slow a lot - then use the clutch to get out of gear and the brake at a light (using very little brake - if the downshifting and slowing is doing at the right speeds and timing. To me this saves on both gas and brakes. Also gives a very smooth slow down and cuts the danger of being rear-ended by a rapid stop or slow down. By doing it this way - the guy behind you knows something is quite different (no brake lights) and usually keeps a more decent distance behind you! lol
