Auto Tranny Opnions
Hey everyone, just wanted to get the experts opnion, mainly the ppl. on this forum. I just talked to my dealer and got good news...my Z was supposed to come in March but I am now getting it in January.
. I ordered a Touring A5 w/ Navigation with Chrome Silver and charcoal laether. I have heard that the downshifting on the A5 is not that great. If anyone has a A5 Z I would like to know your opnion as no cars are available for a test drive in Edmonton. Alberta, Canada. If anyone has experience with the triptronic also please let me know as I have till Nov. 1 st to make up my mind.
Thanks

All I can say is that I'm disappointed in the response of my 5AT in my G35 sedan. When you upshift it, it is very slow to respond (like it's thinking "should I or shouldn't I?").
Downshifts are quicker to occur, but can be rather abrupt. I don't know how this will compare to the Z, but I suspect the shift quality would be the same in manumatic operation. BTW, when in regular auto mode, the shifting is fine.

Thanks Steve O, I think the G35 and Z and pretty similar cars so I really wonder if the triptronic is bad as everyone makes it out to be. What you said about the slow response has been a complaint of many....I may just change my mind.
Slow response manual mode is what to be expected from automatic. No surprise here. But there are different shades of slow, and my Z's automatic is much faster then my previous Celica2000's which had have manual mode too.
Especially if you turn your traction control system off - it makes quite a difference.
Overall I find my choise of automatic as reasonable tradeoff for convenience of city traffic. And manual mode is very useful on rural roads when you want to select your gears for passes.

Yeah I hpoe that with the TCS off it doesn't run that slow. Again I will not be doing much highway driving but more city driving so I too am hoping the trade off is worth it. I drove my friends Honda Prelude and it seemed pretty good so I hope the Z's is better.
Well I have a little over 2600 miles on my AT5 Z.
I have noticed that when doing to the floor starts the tranny
shifts faster than quarter or half throttle starts.
I heard the tranny is the same one used in the G45 which
is designed for the V8 so it is over engineered for the Z's
needs which is a good thing.
I also find that I rarely use manual mode, because It's easy to
forget which mode your in. Kinda embarrasing to have it bouncing off the rev limiter in first.
Bottom line if your use to driving an automatic then you probably be extremely pleased with it.
If your use to driving a stick you be wishing you went with a
stick in it. You experience more of a "oneness" with the car with
a MT. I think I would prefer a MT even over a SMG.
