Naughty, naughty! Let's not turn this into a pirate board. Piracy = theft. (I don't think we would tolerate posts giving info on how to steal a Z.)

The price of the service manual is a crime in itself!

Ahh, the most famous justification for piracy: the price was too high, so that makes it OK to steal it.

Well, a higher price DOES shift the risk/reward ratio in your favor doesn't it?

Exactly! And in short order these will follow

1) I wasn't going to buy it anyway, so if I steal it, nobody is losing a sale

2) it's just me - so what harm is there in that?

3) I'm not stealing - just sharing

- and the best one -

4) fok JOO - you can't Stopp me.

I agree. If they priced the manual at a reasonable cost, most would-be piraters would probably opt to legally purchase it, instead of stealing it. For a product that Nissan had to produce anyway, and which I am pretty sure they would recoup their costs (and profit) just by selling it to their dealers and other auto shops (which will in turn use it to make profit), I would think they could discount copies of the CD to the relative few DIY'ers who want the information.

I would like to think that if no one purchased the manual, they would reduce the price. But because they do not need the additional volume of our purchases to turn a profit, they will probably keep the price high, and laugh on their way to the bank with every consumer purchase.

Of course, I do not support illegally acquiring the manual.

Can someone post a link or FTP site to download a free copy of the manual?

I do have a question, though. Why are the older ones so much cheaper than the new? Supposedly, Courtesy has "factory" CD manuals for the 96 Z for $70.

Will these new ones come down in a few months, or will they stay as high as they currently are for several years?

I think I got the 5 or 6 volume paper set of manuals for my last GM car for $85, and they had a program at the time that allowed me to basically get the CD version for free for filling out a survey. This price is a bit much.

I'm not advocating piracy, just trying to figure out why so expensive?

NO, that's not the justification. The justification is that the price is inflated - price far in excess of value.

And, let me tell you: The service manual is already on CD for the Nissan dealers. All they are doing is selling it at a gross profit. This is wrong and not a way to treat Nissan owners. So, you see, in cases like this, many would have a clear conscience.

Now, the PRINTED manual I understand. The materials and production are far more expensive. But the CD costs them about $5.00 MAX. That's the crime: Charging 42 times over cost. A fair price would be about $50 TOPS.

So don't give us this piracy crap - they frequently CREATE the problem in the first place because of GREED.

Note: This commentary is not meant to encourage the piracy of copyrighted software or documents in violation of Federal and State Laws.

Sorry Intrepid - I don't buy this argument. Our only power and ETHICAL options in this transaction are to:

1) purchase it on Nissan's terms
2) complain about it and threaten to (or actually) purchase something else in the hopes that they'll see the "error" of their way
3) don't purchase it

YOU setting "fair price" on this is about as accurate as me saying "You're being GREEDY keeping your wife/gf/so to yourself like that, so unless you let me pay $200 to sleep with her, I'm just going to do it without paying the $200." I don't think you'd agree to those terms, nor should you.

Now, to get off my high horse here - I agree - it does seem pricy, and I'm certainly not going to buy it at that price. I'm ALSO not going to steal it though.

Take care...

Even if it is at that ungodly high price, remember how much money it will save you in the long run with all of the labor hours you will save! (Trying to look on the brigh side)

I justed want to explain why I think piracy occurs in these situations - I have a certain sympathy in these cases. Despite my feelings, I still buy all my software. But I can tell you there have been times (such as these) in which anyone would be tempted.
