Default Paint - Overall Quality/Warranty

I know this has been cited in the thread around issues but, I feel this is important enough to stand alone. I had a 01 Maxima SE 20th Annv. Edition. Black - I know that black is a tough color to keep pristine, but my feeling was that the paint was inadequate from the beginning. Read - way too thin!

Now that I have my first chip on the front of my PPW Z, it looks a bit shoddy on this model as well. Very, very thin. I know this thread will get populated over time but please post thoughts on perceived quality and whether this should be a warranty item.

Personally, I feel with the paint this thin it won't take much of an impact of any FOD to chip. I know that the clear bra is the definitive prevention but I guess my thinking is the paint is faulty from the get-go and we can't clear-bra the whole car!

thoughts?

no question, I would pay for it! On the Maxima we had some small chips all over - not just the front.

I feel the same way. My 350Z is a fairweather car, so it wont see much highway time (thus reducing the amount of chips from high speeds). But, the clear does seem thin. From a distance the paint looks fine, but up close it is very noticeable. I have the biggest problem with the orange peel on my daytona blue. Also, it seems that they didnt match the paint on the bumpers and gas lid to the rest of the car. It is somewhat upsetting and I have considered writing the corporate office since I am sure the dealer wont do anything for me. I feel this is a BIG problem since many of us are having the same issues with it. I remember a few years ago Chrysler had a problem with their clear coat on the mini vans and they did the right thing.....they helped pay for their mistake and helped pay for a new paint job. I think Nissan was just VERY pressed for time to meet the deadlines they had set for the release of the car that quality in some areas has suffered. Are we all on the same page?

You could be right! Perhaps another reason would be that anytime you minimize your COGS (Cost of Good Sold) you increase your percentage of profit, usually. What does the time and added coat cost per vehicle cost? Multiply that by the production numbers.

Nissan obviously had to short quality in some areas to get to their 'Z' price point. But based on the years of history with their "paint jobs" its probably SOP for them.

Maybe if enough owners complain they will pony up something...doubtful, but possible.

2 cents

The issue with the low quality paint jobs are going to come to a head I think.

Orange Peel, screwed up prep, shamelessly thin coats, etc.

I agree. It was a BIG reason I got white as well. I have been through 2 blacks and a white. White looks good (especially on the Z) and a heck of alot more forgiving. I just patched the chip with some touch-up and clear coat. I looked at the thread on carcareonline.com about how to fix chips. WAY TOO involved for really small ones. You may have no other choice on larger ones.. I hope to NEVER FIND OUT.
