Default Modifications to improve gas mileage

Does anybody know any modifications that can significantly or even make minor positive gains to gas mileage?

avoid pressing gas pedal past half way

buying touring tires in narrower width - be sure to air them up to 40-45 pounds.

short shift to stay in sixth gear as quickly as feasible. skip shift even.

Seriously, you bought a sports car, not a Honda Insight! Why are you even asking?

True dat. That's like people with Ford Mustang GT's wanting to improve mileage on their big ol' V8's. You need to sit back a second and realize what you're driving, and what you got your self into. People don't buy sport cars with fuel economy in mind, at least I don't!

Sorry, with that being said, items such as cold air intakes have been known to slightly improve fuel mileage, but nothing that would be noticeable with daily driving.

Freeway driving helps your mileage. I was averaging something like 16-18mpg until I got on the freeway for the first time in weeks. Shot up past 22mpg instantly.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah, I kind of went in over my head and so I'm pinching pennies here. I'm eating ramen noodles a lot and predrinking at home so I don't have to spend money on drinks at the clubs. I'm normally not that cheap, but I'm saving up for the INGS+1 half kit so I need to save money any way I can.

Anybody know anything else you can do to improve gas mileage.

Our gas mileage isn't bad. Well...the other car in the family that I'm comparing to is an '04 Dodge Durango(avg. mpg of 12) so...get a giant SUV and you'll be happy this car gets what it does for MPG.

i actually get better gas mileage now than my old 4cyl turbo a4... of course it had 260hp, but it was still a 4 banger. I was excited to be seeing close to 30mpg on the highway.

You can tremendously improve your gas mileage by only driving downhill, once you reach the bottom of the hill, call AAA have your car towed back to the top of the hill, sheesh!!

gas is power... use less gas, get less power, may as well have bought a cheaper less powerful car. but owell. just dont accelerate as hard, keep the RPMs down, 55-60mph is more efficient than 80mph on the highway... if you dont mind goin 10 under the limit.

I get about 20 mpg, city or freeway. My friend has a WRX and he gets about 21 mpg. My Nissan truck gets about 18 mpg. I think the best thing you can do is not accelerate too quickly, but then, why have the Z ?

Put your car in neutral when driving downhill.

Shift around 2000 rpms.

I don't think there isn't any real mod to a car to improve gas mileage other than taking it easy on your driving habits.

These are techniques I use when I'm driving my Navigator, since it literally drinks gas. It is averaging 14.5 mpg using the technique, but around 12 mpg if driven normally.

Drive like a 80 year old granny. Slow smooth accelaration and coast as much as you can when coming to a stop. When u are coasting u get great mileage vs. 0 mpg when u are not moving.

Take a route with minimum number of stops such as signal lights and stop signs. Stop and go will kill your gas mileage. So use freeway as much as you can.

Lastly, avoid traffic jam... you are simply burning gas without getting anywhere.

I also heard using A/C affects gas mileage little bit as well.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, I'd probably get better gas mileage if I just stop running up through the gears to 5k+ rpms. If it just didn't feel and sound so good though.....

I heard someone who upgraded to a twin turbo went from avg 22mph to 27mpg - no joke.

I know it sounds like I am trying ot make a joke, but that's what I heard in the F/I forum.

My experience has been, if I drive the car conservatively I can see 30-32 mpg on long trips when the wind and weather are good. On short sprints down to Denver during rush hour 36-38 is not unusual but that is nose to tail traffic going 75-80. Daily city/highway driving my computer shows 24 mpg consistently. I use a long cycle synthetic oil sold by BMW and mid grade gas.
If you want to drive it like a Geo, using a fraction of the available hp, there's no reason you can't do 30 mpg.
The problem is anyone who buys Z is not thinking "Yea, gas mileage".

Try not to drive your car as much if you don't really need to, that's gonna save you some gas.
