Are you buying the Z with a manual or automatic?
These threads never go any where but into a battle of stupidity, auto/manual just a matter of preference. Each person has his or her reasons/parameters on why they want either and neither is right or wrong!
What do you care? This is a forum, that's what it does; people talk about what they want, even sometimes pointless, it's called shooting the sh*t.
Is the manual in the Z the same exact one as the G37 coupe? I just got this month's issue of Automobile and they have the G37 coupe as one of their long term test cars. In the update (paraphrasing here) the manual 6 is a notchy POS. If they are the same I may reconsider the 7AT.
I drive a 5AT (bad left knee) but since I got it I really enjoy it in manual mode. The 7AT will be awesome! Once in a while I will put a brick where the clutch pedal usually goes and stomp on it when I shift so that I can feel my dick get bigger. It doesn't matter what we all think, the clutch as we know it is going away.....
Lambo, Porsche, Ferrari pretty soon won't even offer the traditional 6 speed. Imagine it this way, Manual = Steam engine in the early 1900's Auto = first internal combustion engine
When I drive my wifes slk 55 7speed AMG Speedshift I feel like I am the kid in back to the future. If 370z's 7 speed anything similar to mercedes's 7 speed amg tranny then I am down for the ride.
But I do admit I sometimes stomp on the imaginary clutch pedal if someone is looking at me accelerating or just to make my peenor bigger
In 2008 automatics still sucks out of the corner. When people say some automatics are faster, it's usually in context like "racing straing line from the traffic light". I can't imagine automatic being faster on a track.
You got that right! I have a 5AT with 6MT 3:55's and it blasts out of th hole and is really torquey. The 7AT is going to be something else. I had a SCCA lic to compete with a formula Vee, so I don't have any problems driving a stick. The reality is.....the clutch (as you know it) is going away guys. Example is the GTR.
. It's a variation of manual transmission. Just more complex than usual, and computer does clutch (actually two!) for you. So using GTR example you actually prooved that manual is not going away.
There is a world of difference between mechanics of dual clatch manual

and automatic

More for our case dude. I really wish people would reject these silly paddle shifters so that manufacturers (including nissan) won't make them. They are a half-assed version of a real manual tranny. But the more people want to buy them and not drive REAL manuals, the more they will be produced.
And as for pro racers using paddles, are you referring to F1? No kidding...in F1 there is no goddam room for a shift ****! And I think comparing those vehicles to production cars is a little silly. There isn't much they have in common. The VAST MAJORITY of professional racers use manual transmissions. The real kind with a clutch.

In last years manufacturers start using the same looking paddles, or buttons, on automatic transmission. That's what all the triptroniks, tiptroniks and whatever else each manufacturer calls them are. So now people get very confused about what's paddles are. Because they can be connected to DSG kind manual transmission (BMW M3,GTR) or they can be connected to slow, lazu manual transmission. There is a world of difference between two.
The former can be and is used in racing and the latter is just for a street racing wannabis, who want look cool but too .... let's say lazy to operate manual, and too poor to buy DSG. There is absolutely no reason to have or use paddles on automatic transmission (well, there are few, like drivning in extremely slippery conditions). But in general , it's easier and faster to just let automatic do it's job and not use the paddles.
GTR doesn't have automatic. It has http://2009gtr.blogspot.com/2008/10/how-to-fix-nissan-gt-r-transmission.html

I am aware that the GTR is not an automatic, but a manual that acts like an auto. .the bottom line is say goodbye to the clutch pedal.
I agree with everything you said in the quote except for this part. This is incorrect. The "D" selection will get you around fine in normal driving conditions, but if you want to be aggressive or actually race a 5AT you better use the manual selection of gears. In "D" it will not downshift or upshift at the right time for the max benefit. It's not going to downshift going into a 25 mph turn if you are in drive and if you drag race it count on turning 8/10 - 1 second slower times if you leave it in drive.

Driving an automatic.. will never be as much fun as driving stick. Argue all you want. Dont get me wrong, I like automatic. When Im lazy I just take my girlfriends car.
Just hearing that nice beautiful VQ tone going through automatic shifting just ruins everything, blah. Automatic is more of a cruiser to me.

Love the new styling and shorter wheel base. However, not sure if I like the auto rev matching downshift in the "Manual" gearbox. I mean, it's gonna be weird especially I've driving "heel and toe" downshift for so long, On the plus side, I would like to see how much of a lockup and shift time is on the new 7-spd Auto with paddleshift like thou. So, I'm gonna wait for a personal test drive before I decide whether going manual or Auto this time.
