Just drove the 370Z....
Not bad, Nissan. I'm not going to write a 3 page writeup on it. Just got back in the country 2 day ago, and saw a blue 370z at the dealership. Got about 25 miles behind the wheel... a 7AT touring.
Those are some HUGE blind spots... especially driver side. Really made me nervous changing lanes. The handling was excellent, and the ride was nice considering the shortened wheelbase. The acceleration was strong... a Mazdaspeed 3 tried playing on highway rolls, and get up not too badly... all things considered. Not as many looks as I would anticipate, especially considering that bright (but fugly) candy blue color. It handled pavement irregularities well, so day-to-day livability should be satisfactory on city streets. Who knows how much worse the sport pkg would be. Still limited cargo area... a weekend trip would be tight.
It's a nice car, but looks like a $40K sticker loaded up. For that, I could get a less-than-200 pound heavier 6MT G37 sedan, with twice the room, tons of cargo, lower insurance, longer warranty, better resale and better service. Tough call. Both of these cars have evolved well, and the disparity is not much more than it was before. If the 370Z had come in 200 pounds lighter and $2K less expensive than it did, then I think the 370Z would be different enough to win for me. But as it stands, it's still a limited value proposition. And I already have a second car (SUV) for when I need the space. For those looking for a pure sports car, it's a great deal. I wish Nissan luck... just hope they change the lackluster color options soon. A deep orange would be nice... like the Vette. And a darker blue...
edit: and as for the styling, even with the non-sport wheels and ugly blue... I liked the looks in person.

I agree... they should bring back Le Mans Sunset and Daytona Blue.

I'd buy one yesterday if they had LMS.

I'm not sure if Sports package makes any difference with the suspension. I remember driving a G35c with the Brembo Sports package, and I felt every pebble on the road. It was very annoying and quite stiff. The 370Z with Sports Package I drove last night was very comfortable for everyday driving. I've not pushed it any harder since I was in the neighborhood streets.

What are you talking about? Car and Driver weighed a base + sports at just over 3370lbs, and said that the Touring + Sport weighs over 3400lbs. Edmunds' Base + Sports weighed in 3360lbs - obviously, one car had more gas than the other. So to say that this is a 3300lb car is simply wrong. Even the base model still weighs 3330lbs last I checked.

Sounds like the G37= big disappointment. This is what car and driver said about it at the 2008 Virginia Track. Despite its well-balanced and responsive rear-drive chassis, the Infiniti G37 Sport didn’t feel terribly comfortable on the track and required plenty of cooling time between hot laps. Fingers point to its 3723-pound weight (which led to brake fade after only a few big stops), an engine that didn’t quite feel like 330 horses, and easily overheated and thus slippery tires. Pound the brakes hard, and the G37 assumes a crash is imminent and cinches up the seatbelts—as if we needed more evidence that this car was not suited to track workouts.
I think they have all this worked out for the Z esp if you get a base with just the sport package.
Same engine 300-400 lbs lighter, better suspension, bigger brakes, wider and better/lighter wheels, etc etc etc.
A much better car and it comes in at about 34k whereas a similar G37 comes in at almost 38k for a "cheap one" and does not have the sport package the Z does.
