seeing that the z gets 21/27 now, they're shooting for 30? sounds like a waste to me and added complexity to the drive train and the weight of the batteries...stooopid idea if you ask me.

...they should just drop in the electric drive system from the "Tesla" and be done with it...

Yeah but the idea of having tq from low rpm does sound pretty tempting to me, specially with the solid redlne the Z has right now.

In my lifetime, I expect we'll all end up driving auto tranny alternative fuel BS vehicles. I'm happy as a clam at high tide to have a good ol' high-compression, internal combustion, manual tranny sports car while I can still make some lasting memories!

Let's hear it for big freakin' carbon footprints!

Rather have a 500Z, the added weight of a hybrid system really takes it out of the "sports car" class.

It will be heavier and thus handle poorly compared to the standard 370z. It will probably not be any faster and cost well over $40K. It will also be very diffucult to modify. What's the point of a car that gets better gas mileage if it costs more to buy?

Hybrids suck. They are expensive, complex and unproven over the long haul. If you want good gas mileage at a good price point, get a turbo diesel.

370 is already direct injection for those thinking they should just add that - it already is..

as for hybrid - thats just ubber lame....

I hate how this world has all the sudden over night turned to hybrid this, hybrid that, lets all buy those green reusable grocery bags and crap........its gotten pretty annoying lately...

The 370Z is not direct injection. It's conventional sequential port injection. Three Severnty Z dot com broke the story, everyone else picked up on it. Nissan is denying it. We had Japanese sources for the information.

IMO, the whole story is bogus and is nothing but unfounded speculation.

Here's three reasons why I believe it's a myth.

1) Somebody saw this ...

.. and interpreted it to mean that the 370 would have a hybrid version. See the empty section "C" in the FSM??? The chances are much greater that it's a standard template for all FSMs and it's blank because there is not and never will be a hybrid in the Z.

2) None of the regular Nissan insiders have yet to hint at the possibility of a hybrid Z. None of the mainstream media or automotive press has provided independant confirmation of the original "story" from the 370Z site.

3) Market. Hybrid vehicles have a target market of quiche-eating tree-huggers. The 350/370Z are sold to the exact opposite target market. Nissan has already cut production of the 370Z to about 10K this year. Of that, the potential market for a hybrid version would probably be 500 to 1000 cars - hardly worth it in the big marketing picture.

I'd expect to see a hybrid Versa, Sentra, Cube or Maxima long before a Z. Who wants to buy a Z that weighs 1000 lbs more than the current one (batteries and motors are heavy)?

I prefer the line "I downshift when I pass a Prius just so they can hear me hurt the environment".

Like I said before, I wrote the orginal story and I have sources in Japan where I got the information both inside and outside of Nissan.

The people at Nissan North America's PR department who denied the posibility of the program probably don't even know whats going on in development at NTC, they are allowed to only repeat the offical company line. The product planners at NNA probably didnt even want the car for the NA market. This is all probably going to with the new CAFE stuff.

The only current production car to meet the new requirements is suposedly the Prius.

The Toyota Supra replacement is rumored to be back in development as well-as a hybrid.

More BS. The CAFE requirement mainly stipulates an AVERAGE fuel economy across a manufacturers model line. The average required right now I believe is around 26.5mpg and will increase incrementally to around 35mpg by 2020.

36 mpg by 2016, with specs on CO2 output. Check your facts before you call me a BS'er.
