I can tell they were in the engine compartment before the TC test. It's half way open. ;-)

hmmm, I would think that (in particular on the track), you would only down-change when you're braking anyway. So even if you do get the odd engine braking, it should not impact your time as you're slowing down at that stage anyway ... actually the engine braking might help with the braking (if anything).
It's more about upsetting the car while setting up for a turn, (and braking and downshifting) than engine-braking.

If you don't get the rev-matching (heel-toe) right, the car will "jerk" or "lunge". This is a bad thing that can, and will, cost time on a course.

They cut to commercial when the engine overheated at the track....
