I keep Sport mode ON, and am trying to get used to it.
I think the RPM bump is excessive.
If you are downshifting to accelerate, it is OK.
If you are downshifting to STOP, it is annoying. You are attempting to STOP, and sport mode just bumped the motor several thousand RPM.

Duh. Use the brakes to stop. Seeing as how the brakes can lock the wheels (to the extent that the ABS will allow) at any speed, there's no way downshifting can help you stop sooner.

I think vashuba311 is speaking specifically about the auto rev-match feature on the 370Z.

I was referring to your comment, which was directly above my post:

"If you are downshifting to STOP, it is annoying. You are attempting to STOP, and sport mode just bumped the motor several thousand RPM."

From what I could tell during a test drive in a 370Z 6MT, by the time you've completed the shift and let the clutch out, RevMatch is completely off the gas and delivering no power at all to the drivetrain.

I leave it On all the time. The matches are perfect so its easier on the clutch, especially downshifting before turns. But good thing there is an Off switch for when I'm bored.

Been driving with the sport mode ON for about 1,000 miles. Getting used to it. Still am not sold on its merits.

I love it, I'm not going to heel toe around EVERY corner besides you have an "off" button.

I think it's a pretty awesome feature partly BECAUSE it's got an off switch. And because i drive a 350z and dont have one

The GTR doesn't come with a clutch pedal and gear lever. But yes it does rev match for you with the paddle shifters depending on what mode you are in. The race mode is more aggressive.

WTF??? downshifting dosent make you stop "faster", yes... but the car balance stays even allowing the suspension to allow for shorter stops and under control for corners... the rev-match also saves clutch and syncronizer cones.... if all the parts are spinning at the same speed then the wear components will last longer...

With the Sport mode ON for about 12 months, apparently I have altered my driving technique. Difficult to recognise that rev-match is ON.

This is kind of an old thread, but oh well.

The point of downshifting during braking isn't to make the car stop faster. A car can only slow as much as the tires will allow. The OEM 370Z brakes are enough to lock all four tires, so you can't stop any faster than that.

Rev matching, be it from heel and toe or from the nifty rev match feature, is used so the car will be in the correct gear when you start to accelerate again.

The compression of the engine can slow the car though, so you could also use it to lessen the brake force you need to use while slowing the car. Racing drivers do this sometimes if they are cooking their brakes and need to use them less. On the street, you could also downshift to lengthen the life of your brakes.
