I'm not a fan of the motor shutting off at a stoplight. I mean, what's the failure mode of that 'feature'? Your car's battery goes out and in the old days, the alternator would see to it that you got home and it wouldn't be until you started up again that you'd realize you have a dead battery. no big deal. Now you realize this when you are at a stoplight at an intersection? or stopped on a crowded freeway at rush-hour.

Does anyone know if the newer cars have a work-around for this?

I think this will become a pandemic problem in the future as these cars hit the second and third-hand markets.
@ 1mpg, and I'm going to guess the payback is not there or not even
close, the system's replacement including labor is probably $2500-to
$4000.00 not to mention the safety hazard of not being able to
continue your journey, you could be in the middle of a Ferguson at
a stop light or your mapquest sent you to Harlem , or your soccer mom
wife is sitting on a railroad track, geez who needs that kind of
uncertainty.
Currently gas is cheap, so how may 10's of thousands of miles would
you need to travel to even come close to payback @ the said 1 mpg
improvement? , 40,000 60,000 ?
My money is on 'recall' , Recall the whole program as a life safety issue.
