Default Wing

I'm having a Stillen wing mounted on my Roadster next week, but the paint shop is concerned about mounting it with just double-stick tape. Anyone have a better way of mounting it without destroying the trunk lid or wing? I want to be sure the sucker stays in place and doesn't give me issues later.
Once it's mounted I'll post some pic's.
The paint shop also had concerns about the wing being rubber. They're afraid the paint won't look right.

Paint does not normally bond well with rubber. Usually, it ends up peeling or flaking off after a while. Notwithstanding, there are some types of paint that will flex with rubber but in the end will not bond as well with other materials.

The only other way to mount it, other than double-sided tape, is to drill some holes on your hatch/trunk lid and bolt it on. This is the best way if you are committed to that style of spoiler and do not anticipate ever chaning it or taking it off.

Hope this helps.

The Stillen spoiler is urethane, which is a flexible plastic polymer. I suppose it's similar to rubber but technically it's different (not quite as flexible). I'm also considering a Stillen Type 1 spoiler and Stillen says there's no problem having it painted. Once it's mounted, it shouldn't flex enough to cause any paint adhesion problems. Make sure it's primed before the paint. Post pics when you get it mounted!

if they think its the best way let them do it but make sure you ask them what kind of warranty comes with it.... just incase it flys off.... or paint chips or stuff like that..... other than that its all about the good ol drill and screws

You will not lose the wing if they attach it with 3M tape. One inch is supposed to hold 5 pounds. Line the wing with it, and the only fear of it comign off would be if you hit warp speed.

I used 3m double sided tape on my spoiler and it hasn't given me any problem. I bet you'll be fine.

Sounds like you need to find a different paint shop.

I just put one on my car...here is my suggestion.....drill the holes as Stillen requests. I did not and had a few gaps from using the tape so I had to go and drill them from the bottom. I missed the right locations twice, you do not see it but IF that thing ever has to come off I am going to need some serious work on the hatch.
Finally, if this is what you want, do it as the manufacturer says. Great looking spoiler btw. Search my name and you wil see mine.

Good luck!

thanks for all the replies. I got a lot of great responses.
I'll go with the 3m tape, and have the shop use the screws also.
Good one, can0802. But, it could happen.....warp speed, I mean....maaaaybe.

The shop that installed mine also had concerns about the 3m tape, so they ended up using polyurethane glue (the stuff they use to assemble corvettes), that sucker is on there for life now lol....

I've had mine on for 3 years now and so far no problems with paint issues...

Mine's on with just tape and I have no problems with it. I was worried at first too, but after almost a year of driving and opening/closing the trunk, I'm pretty sure it ain't coming off anytime soon!
