I just bought a 2005 roadster. The soft top was not working, and now I just bought a new problem. I tough it was jus a motor replacement project, but seems there is no power getting into the whole system, I am trying to find information on fuses, relays, and any other controls this system may have, can any one direct me where to start looking?
My bad, it is operating up and down now, but when is opening it won't go all the way down, seems that something is not going all the way down, and she is closing the latch won't let the top go all the way down. Any idea how to get it right?

There is a simple toggle switch on the driver's side frame that tells the controller when the top is down. It's possible that the steel lever is bent slightly inward. You could look at it and close the switch by hand and bend slightly outward. It may correct the problem.
Tried to manually activate it and it stopped operating the top on the way down, seems that something it's out of sync and it's not completing any cycle on any direction, any idea what it can be?
The elastic straps were worn, look in here and found the replacement procedure, look around my garage and found 2 small bungees left from a kit, put them on and voila, top is closing, now looking for a solution for the latch not opening on the rear to fully close the top.

The switch is $180 +shipping so be gentle.
gl!
VERT NOOB ALERT!!
(And yeah, I searched. )
John, does this switch also control/trigger the dash warning light ("top is not closed" or whatever the light means?)
My friend who bought "my" ZR - which I owned for two weeks, if that - is having the light come on when top is closed and latched tight. Operation is normal, open/close/latch, etc. Seemingly opposite of the problem in this thread but... seems logical that the switch also informs when closed improperly (but it's not and it's snug at the latch).
She had it at Z Car Garage for other stuff and Rob said he'd not seen that before so is researching. But if it's the switch, I suppose it should be easy enough to test with a VOM and/or jumper to diagnose.
Search revealed all sorts of opening/closing maladies and indicator lamp on when top is all the way down. Nothing about when top is closed.

@ Mic,
While certainly not a expert, the BCM knows if the rear tonneau switch is closed. I believe the front latch has a switch as well.
If my top operated correctly and the "Open" light was still on, I'd prolly pay Nissan to diagnose and call it a day if I couldn't solve myself. 02.
Just happened , when go to put top up, the hard boot cover opens but that is all. Can open and close the boot cover but nothing else works. (Have had the switch stick before in process but would just hit it again and would work. ). Been told taking to dealer can be very expensive. Any suggestions?
Hi Starchecker, An old question for you but...
I have an 08 350z Roadster "Touring", Convertible. The top is experiencing a very similar problem.
Hit the "Down" button, windows and seat move, 5th bow lifts, deck lid moves a few inches and stops - varies with each operation.
Let go of the Down Button, press again, ops continue, for a bit more, stops, repeat... and repeat... and repeat...
Sometime down in 2 cycles, sometimes in 4-6.
There are several "similar" descriptions, several similar fixes, several very different.
Anyone know the definitive answer, fix?
I had similar problem on my 05 zr. Started with 5th bow sounding sluggish & weak like motor was straining. Had several times where it wouldn't budge, but heard the latch in back "click" with top indicator light coming on. Sometimes with several attempts it would go. Finally got to where it wouldn't open, but windows & such would go down like normal early cycle. Turned out it wasn't my 5th bow motor, but some sort of regulator that controls all the different motors cycling at specific times. Luckily, I had purchased an extended warranty which covered most of the repair cost. Just fyi, may not be the 5th bow motor which is what I had expected to hear.
hey there, this is my exact issue, bit of a long shot but I don't suppose you have any details of this regulator? I've exhausted every option and this sounds like a new symptom I can check.
Hey! New here, to the forums. I've been through this entire thread and don't know if my issue is something new or I just misread a few things... Anyway, I'm not new to Z cars, just the Z33. I loved my t-tops in the S130 so I bought a Roadster. Top worked fine for a few weeks, and then this happened... (caution: jerky video, but you can hear the motor trying...)
I also noticed that the "sequence of events" prior to the top going down isn't working, either. Windows will roll down, but the passenger seat doesn't move anymore. And, well.... the top just sits there.
hey there, that's certainly a familiar noise! I've been trying to work out why this is happening as I have the exact same issue .
I've got numerous posts on all the things I've tried that had lead me to this same problem . There really isn't much else to try so I'm hopefully getting to the bottom of things.
04 350z Top lid stuck straight up and nothing moves. Help
I replaced my inside door handle and now it opens fine. But my passenger window will not open and when I tried to open my top it froze leaving the lid sticking straight up and the top half way folded, Is there a way to manually fold the top down until I can afford to fix the problem. And is there any other advice on how to make this work again without spending a lot of cash?

Here is a link to the Owner's Manual. Manually operation of the top starts on page 3-24
Reading some of these posts and the amount you guys are paying is crazy, but with all motorized parts, there will be failures at some point.
2004 Touring Roadster, bought in 07'. I had to replace the top due to a rip in late 2011. Dealer price $2,500 so I called Nissan Corporate and they split it 50/50 so all I paid was $1,250.
Late 2017, the back glass folding up (Operation # 3 in sequence) wasn't working. 5th Bow Motor issue. Dealer wanted $900 for the part and $600 for install, so I pulled it myself sent it to a guy that repairs them on eBay for $45.
Two weeks later got the part back and I was back in business.
Last week, was taking the convertible out for a drive and the Tonneau cover got stuck mid way trying to open (Operation # 7 in sequence). Assuming one or both of the motors (left and/or right) are worn (Part # 97092-CE40A). Best I could find as OEM was $767 each. Ebay has some used ones for @ $100 each. I contacted the same ebay guy and again will be $45 to repair.
I believe these can be accessed from the trunk, by pulling the plastic covers which I'll do next week. I'll keep you in the loop.

Blooster, "Gulfstream"?
One of your Tonnaeu cover motors is bad or just gummed up. Each one raises the metal bracket holding the cover so if one motor stops, the operation stops. There is a left and right (but the actuator is the same, part # 97092-CE40A) If you can pull them, mikesbestpartsinc(1085 ) on eBay repairs them for $45. I sent my 5th bow motor to him when it jammed up. Type in: CONVERTIBLE TOP MOTOR REPAIR SERVICE FOR NISSAN 350Z and you'll find his page.
I have experienced the exact same issue last week. (I barely drive the car, so it can sit for months at a time without being driven). I'll be pulling the actuators next week and sending them to Mike to repair. Normal turn around is 1-2 weeks depending on where you live.
I have a couple of good diagrams below that detail the parts (although the actual part numbers aren't listed)
5th bow motor: 90552P
Tonnaeu Cover Motor: 97294/97295

I sent my 5th bow motor to Mike to have it rebuilt over Christmas, good quick turn around. Installed it and the top didn't work. With my car, 2008 GT, the windows go down, the seat moves forward, the cover latch clicks, then nothing. I can coax it to open by pushing the button multiple times. Never a problem going up. Is it possible my switch is bad?
