Default Trunk Issue

Without taking pics, I'll try to describe my problem. When I open my trunk, the middle back edge of the trunk rubs up against the car. This is causing the paint to come off. Does anyone else have this issue?

Never heard of that. Does the rest of the trunk seem aligned properly (i.e. equal gaps between other body panels). How about the tonneau cover, does it seem aligned properly?

Never had this problem. I can actually raise the trunk lid while the tonneau cover is raised without any rubbing issues.

I actually had the same problem as of last week. Took my roadster to West Covina Nissan and they adjusted the trunk. The trunk is no longer rubbing against the car. Unfortunately, I do have to touch up the small scratched area.

I had the issue on my ZR as well. If you look at the mounting brackets on the inside of the trunk, you can adjust them by loosening the bolts and moving the trunklid, adding washers, etc.

Default Same issue and Nissan is boggled

I have the same issue and Nissan has no idea how to fix it...........such a pain in the A! They suggested body damage but not a single panel has been changed on the vehicle. Is it just an adjustment?

This happen to my brother's roadster when he first bought it back in 2004, he took it back to them and they made a adjustment and repainted the lid.. He's had no problems since then...

Mossy Nissan in Oceanside fixed it..

Just wanted to add to this thread. Out of the blue I seem to have this problem now. I was wondering what the heck was making a poping sound when the tonneau cover was going up. I looked at the middle of the cover and sure enough it was rubbing against the trunk.

I remembered this thread. Its nice to have a forum just for the ZR, for stuff like this. I will have to check out the mounting brackets and see what I can do to adjust the trunk.

Take it to a good body shop for adjustment. They do these things all the time.

Netko is right -- if you would take your car to a shop to get the hood alignment adjusted, you can do the same for your trunklid.

If you want to do it yourself, you can adjust the trunklid like you adjust a hood -- just loosen the bolts a little to adjust side to side, or take them off and add washers to adjust height. I didn't try to touch the tonneau cover -- adjusting the trunk worked for me.

I bought some touch up paint a while back to cover up the place where they rubbed, but haven't gotten around to doing the do. If you're in warranty and you've got paint damage, I'd say take it back to the dealer and have them fix it.

I just adusted the brackets in the trunk. It helped but I can tell there is a little gap difference. It doesn't hit anymore but it bugs me I have a little more gap on one side. I just need to do more adjusting or send it to a shop.

It would probably take a shop 5-10 min to get it right.

Default much of the same rubbing

Guys,
Same problem with my 04 ZR touring. The chipped paint is on the toneau cover. I also notice that the trunk lid sit about 1/4" below the toneau lid (where the two meet). Not noticing how it was before, is this the normal "difference" between the two? Lastly, what do you think would cause the shift in the trunk lid and/or toneau lid to cause the rubbing in the first place?

Default quick followup to my trunk issue

ok, so i got brave and removed the black rubber bumpers covering the two bolts that attach the trunk lid to the hinge on the right side, then took my trusty socket to the two bolts to loosen slightly, bingo! with a slight nudge not to screw up the alignment too much i got the lid to move just a few millimeters to make the difference, a quick retighten of the bolts and snap on the rubber bumpers over the bolt heads and all is perfect, hope this help someone else, my issue was affecting the right side alignment hence i only needed to adjust the one side

Did you buy the car used? Did you do all the background checks (crashes,
floods, etc.) Consult your friendly local body shop technician.

This problem is apparently a defect in a number of the Z roadsters. I also noticed that when its extremely hot, my hood still slightly rubs against the car. Even after I had my hood adjusted by WCN. There is a difference in height between the trunk and the tonneau cover of at least 1/8" and when its really hot, the hood may slightly bend in the top middloe causing both the hood and the tonneau cover to rub. This really isn't a problem for me unless its like 100 degrees, but its quite annoying and you would think a problem this small should be a very easy fix for Nissan. My next oil change, I will have them adjust it again and we'll see.......

Now that I think about it, the trunk lid is able to clear the tonneau cover when it is either in the garage or when out of the sun. The sun mus t have some play in the problem. Unfortunately, the paint is still missing on the upper center edge of the tonneau. Until I have it adjusted, it is a mood point to touch it up.

Last question though, looking at the side profile of the car, does the line between the tonneau cover and trunk run continuous or is there a step in the seam? You can see the difference between the back left and back right side, and the result of the two "rubbing."

Yeah sounds like it has happened to quite a few people. I have it fixed but the gap isn't exactly perfect.
