Navigation System Shut Down??
Navigation System Shut Down
I have a touring z with Nav. several times while driving along, the unit shuts down and the door remains open. I push any number of function buttons and it won't come back up. I push the button to shut the door, and reopen, do this maybe twice, and the screen will reappear (w/o the disclaimer step). I have set the display to "cont" so that shouldn't be the problem.
Anyone else experienced this with yours? It has happened on smooth road and bumpy road, so I can't associate it entirely to a skip in the DVD. I have had nav in by 02 Maxima and currently in our 04 and NEVER experienced a total shutdown of the unit.
I apologize if there are other threads on this; I'm at work and don't have time to search. If so, just direct me. Otherwise, I'm anxious to hear what the outcome was of any other problems like this with other cars.
Thanks,
srm

Guess what, the same exact thing happened to me the other day! It seemed to happen when I went over bumps, it went out 2 or 3 times, i opened and closed the door and it came back on.
It finally totally shut off so i shut the door and left it alone.
When I started the car later it came back on fine and hasnt done it since, go figure. I will let you know if it happens again.

I'll take a stab at this even though I don't have one. If the system's default behavior is to shut down anytime it has a problem reading the DVD (from bumps, etc.), your optics may need to be adjusted (not a user-adjustable item). Generally there is a pot in there for focus that will need to be tweaked...those who have older PlayStation 1s will be familiar with this. If it's shutting off even on smooth roads, sounds like the player is just having one hell of a time reading the DVD, so it could even be a scratched disc.
take a look at the duplicate thread I started in the Coupe forums. I'm getting a lot more response there because as you would expect, there are more z's with nav, both 03's and 04's out there. This seems to be occurring with several 04's and it is shaping up to possibly have something to do with the new motorized door that turns the display on and off.

Take a look at the response from Jeff in the coupe forum. He has described the cause to the problem. I tested the theory on the way home and BINGO...shift the door a little bit when the unit is on and you can cause the display to go blank. Again, read his response; that's what I plan to share with my dealer.

I had the same problem and the dealership took a look at it. It turns out Nissan installed a bad door sensor for the nav system (a problem discovered in another Nissan). The nav system turns off because the sensor thinks the door has been shut (which is not the case). The dealer put in a new sensor and have not had that problem since (its been about 2 months). Hope this helps.

My dealer has ordered the replacement parts for mine as well. Thanks again to the forum for helping to make that process easier. It sure makes a difference when you go in knowing what is wrong and what needs to be done. It is really bizarre what is going on with it. Just tonight, it thought it should shut down, but the door didn't close all the way and then I couldn't get it to open back up. Not until I got home, was parked, and restarted the car did it correct itself. I sure hope the replacement parts for mine do the trick too! Thanks, again!

I thought I'd give a quick update...no parts are in yet for a repair. Dealer says they are on back-order! I guess there are quite a few of us with the cranky Nav door!! At least there is a fix...srm
