Default How to prevent roof tears?

I picked up a 06 garage queen with low low miles, and have been reading about the soft tops getting wear issues caused by the roof clips. Is there anyway to prevent this or reduce the wear. The cars out of warranty, but in as new condition,so I thought I'd ask fello roadster members
Thanks
Ken

Typically the first thing you want to do it check the frame for any sharp, jagged or rough surfaces. It you find any, grind them down until smooth with a dremel and paint over the expose metal to prevent rust.

You can also add sleeves. You want to make sure that the vinyl material/soft top material doesn't rub against anything rough as it makes contact with the metal roof frame.

Lastly, you want to keep up with the maintenance of your top. There are several soft top treatments that keep it fresh and prevent dry rotting. Cycle the top every now and then (don't leave it down or up for weeks at a time). Obviously try to keep it garage and away from lots of rain or extreme heat.

If you do all these things, your top should last you a long while.

Sorry for the late reply. I thought when I posted, I would get instant email notifications to replies but it wasn't on.

Thanks for the compliment and the welcome Jason.

Mayron, 303, Vinylex or Raggtopp are all excellent choices. I reccomend Raggtopp as it's less prone to running than the others.

William,

You mentioned that we can add sleeves to the frame... do we need to make them ourselves or are they available aftermarket? I've never owned a convertible until just last week so it'd be great if you could give a few pointers about how/where to check for rough edges as well!

Lockedcogs, the sleeves I was refering to are bicycle chainstay protectors ( http://lizardskins.com/store/product...9cae6f3f040613 ) but those aren't necessary.
You can make something equally as protective yourselves. Just go to a fabric store and find a fabric that you thick would work. All you have to do is wrap them around the parts of the frame that you thick may need it.

Alternatively, you could use patches on the inside of your top between the top and the frame.

The first step though is making sure your frame's surface is smooth and free of rough edges. Just run your fingers over the surfaces.

It's nice to have good friends. When you have the top off, it's the best and easiest time to fully inspect the frame and make any alterations necessary.
