I am airing my stupidity so maybe no one else will fall into the trap. I changed my oil pressure sending unit and over torqued it. This cracks the upper pan. BTW the total torque on this unit is 10 ft-lbs which is about finger tight. I am now looking at replacing the upper pan to fix my stupidity

 

Yea...

I laugh because I did the same thing a few years back...in-fact, there's many people who have so dont feel too bad...

on the bright side...if you ever wanted to build the block now would be the time!

Whenever I see a new thread in which someone mentions they're going to replace the sender, I warn that about this issue. If mine ever fails, that will be the one time I'll take my car to a Nissan dealer and put the risk on them. I do recall a thread where someone was able to repair theirs using JB Weld.

 

Sorry to hear, and yes, those fittings are quite fragile. Finger tight and checking them for leaks is about the best you can do...

 

This actually applies to any fitting that uses pipe thread. NPT fittings are tapered, not straight like machine thread.

 

The upper pan has now been replaced. I had it done professionally and they only charged me $500 to do it. I am going to do my best to ignore the oil pressure gauge on this car because I have no faith in the reading. Goes against my nature but bad data is bad data.

 

I wouldnt ignore it...if it's reading zero (or close to) check to ensure you have oil!

 

It is not zero, it ranges from 20-120 at the same temperature differing RPMs
