Default brake dust?

My Mom just purchased a Roadster and is telling me that the front wheels are collecting alot of brake dust. Is this normal for a Z Roadster?

thanks for the replies...

it is normal for the z in general. in one week's time, the front wheels look like doo doo.

only remedy is to wash it very often or change to a low dust pad.

No, we have special front wheels that have automatic gunmetal color conversions.

Yeah, like ragtop said, changing the pads will help a lot.

Oh my yes. This car produces more dust than any I've ever seen*. So much in fact that I've taken to carrying a rag with me just to wipe the wheels with.

As said before, changing your brake pads to something better will reduce the amount.

* I have a running joke with a friend that's about the cloud of dust I kick up every time I brake

thanks for the hookup on the wheel exchange. I actually work at Quality Nissan in Temecula and can probably get it for less than $700.00. I'll look into it.

She wants a rear wing now. any suggestions?

Default For a wing

You might consider just going with the OEM wing. If the truck is open and you put the top down the Cover and trunk will hit each other. The OEM is about the smallest one around.

Default try crystal guard on wheels

Mine gets loads of break dust too, but recently when i applied crystal guard to the roadster, I used some on the wheels also...
Results are outstanding - I haven't had to wipe my wheels again, and they stay clean!
good luck!

I had the same complaint. Advice was to change pads to either Greenstuff or Hawk HPS. I went for the Hawk pads b/c they were consderably cheaper. The pads just arrived today. I hope to install them over the weekend

ciramjo,
I would like to hear how you like the new pads. Also how difficult theywere to install and how you would rate their performance compared to stock.
thanks

Talking BRAKE DUST

Just my 2 cents.........

I replaced my pads with GreenStuff about 3,500 miles ago because of the brake dust issue. I simply got tired of cleaning my wheels every day.

They were very easy to change, taking about 45 minutes total.

Now...........no dust. Just a very little after 750-1000 miles. All I have to do now is just spray a little water on my wheels and wipe off the little dust that is there. I am now a Happy Camper.

Well, I installed my Hawk HPS pads on Friday. It was very easy. After removing the wheels, you remove only bolt from the caliper (the lower one furthest from the brake line), rotate the caliper out of the way and install the new pads using the shims from the old pads. I also used some anti-squeal compound from 3M, but I'm not sure that's necessary. Push back the master cylinder with a c-clamp, rotate the caliper back, install the caliper bolt and wheel and you're done. Brakes work fine with no squeal. It's only been a couple of days, but so far no sign of dust. The stopping performance is supposed to better than the OEM pads, but I have no way to evaluate that. The car still stops fine just as it always did. I'll let you know more on the dust situation in a week or so. The pads cost me $60 plus $4 shipping. And yes, my wife thinks I'm crazy!

Thanks, Ciramjo
and thanks for the details of the mechancal proceedure. I will be interested to hear about the dust issue when you get a few more miles on the new pads.
Thanks again
John

I'ts been about a week and I have about 120 miles on my new Hawk HPS front brake pads now and I have no real complaints. The amount of brake dust produced is dramatically reduced from what it was with with the oem pads, but there is a layer of dust on the rims - about the same amount as on the rear wheels that still have the oem pads, and about as much as I would expect from any car. I am a little disappointed since I was expecting even less dust from what I've read, but I'm not unhappy. Maybe when they wear out I'll try the Greenstuff pads to see how they compare.

Thanks, Ciramjo:
Sorry to hear you are disappointed with the new pads, but I appreciate the info. At the rate mine are wearing, it won't be long until I replace them... Based on your experience, I try the 'greenstuff' and see if they perform better. As for the dust, since I started putting crystal guard on the wheels, it hasn't been to much of a problem...you might try yourself.
regards,
John
