Default 5V pre-outs

Simple question. There are a few heaad units out there with 5V pre-outs. However, I am finding that the majority of mid-level Amps handle somewhat less (like 4V or less). Will a head-unit/amp combination missmatch still work, compensate, or cause meltdown? Example Kenwood Excelon --> Alpine V12 amp

It will work just fine. If, which is wont, there is a problem there is a 20 dollar fix.

muchas gracias. I called Alpine and they told me the same. Suggested I may need to increase the gainon the amp. My system sounds distorted at low volumes..maybe it's my speakers.... ;-(

The higher the output voltage of the head unit means you should be able to turn the gains down on the amp and get similar volume to a lower output HU with amp gains up. In theory this means there is less chance of noise interference due to having the amp gains set too high. The eclipse HU in my supra has 8v outputs. Eclipse also has HU's with 16v balanced outputs that are supposedly really nice, though I have not heard that particular head unit.

Without getting into the details of the subjact, You also have to think about the impedence of the Outputs. Like the Eclipse units versus Alpine Units. Eclispe Claims 8Volt at a certin Impedence (Ohms) And Alpine may have a lower Voltage but different Impedence.

Just my .02 cents.

The Eclipse deck parboy mentions is the CD8061. 16V balanced line outs, copper chassis, etc. Great deck.

Here's a link to an excellent reference site that describes lots of mobile audio situations:

Good luck.

There are other methods if you don't have access to O'scopes and recorded sine waves.

Let me know if you want a description for other methods.
