Default Tweeter options

I'm about to install the Diamond Hex 1" tweeters. They are huge. What have you guys done about mounting large tweeters in the stock location..or elsewhere?

my A/d/s tweeter are 1.4 inch. I just took the stock ones out and put the A/d/s in. They fit perfectly. If you take that panel off and unscrew the metal plate back there it will be blatantly clear how easy it is to put your aftermarket tweeters back there.

I know how to put them behind the stock opening. I just think the stock hole is too small. I mean it look about .5" which will be blocking part of the 1" new tweet. I was wondering if anyone has sucessfully flush mounted a large tweeter by widening the stock hole..and still allowing it to be angled if needed.

Manually moving the tweeters around the car, I'm starting to get the feeling they would sound best lower. Has anyone flush mounted to kick panels?

I was told that the stock location is to far away from the main speakers to provide good or optimal performance. Is that true? Hence, my tweeters are in the door with my speakers. The factory ones are still in place but disconnected.

After spending considerable time moving the Diamond Tweets around the car manually I think you are absolutely right. When I listen to slower instrumental/vocal songs it just sounds odd to have the tweeter far away from the midrange, like seperating half a person's voice. The best spot for me personally seemed to be slightly above/left of the mid-range with the tweeter slanted up and to the rear.

Now I see the purpose of the door pods someone fabricated recently, I can't see myself mounting the tweeters in the stock location. I notice the door above/left the 6.5s is somewhat flat and if you go up an inch or two there seems to be room behind to put the flush-mount tweeter. Yes, it would be crazy for me to drill a 1" hole in the door but the only other option I see is in the kick panels which may be too low and tucked away to get the sound I want.

I need to find someone who ha actually mounted the tweets on the door.

This is where I mean. If you go up an inch or two (feeling from inside the 6.5 hole with the cover off) there seems to be enough room behind to house the tweeter:

That's exactly how mine are mounted. They overlap the mid's just slightly. Sounds awesome and I like the fact that they are hidden.

Okay, well that's not how mine are. They are mounted above and forward of the mid's within the factory grill. The grill was modified by drilling out the holes that aren't really holes from the factory.

Mine are also angled upward (toward the listener) and even though they are in the same location as the mids and do overlap (very slightly) the sound quality is awesome. The key is opening up the holes in the upper area of the factory grills. Why Nissan made them only about 50% open is beyond me. Another reson why the factory Bose sucks I guess.

OK, I think I get what you are saying.. you put them ON the factory grill. Did you flush mount them there? That is a pretty good idea, but I'm sure someone out there is gonna say why didn't we just buy 2-way speakers if we wanted them to sound so close together ;-)

Anyway, your idea is a safer bet..if I want to replace the grill they are much cheaper than the whole door panel..but I still think I would like the look and perhaps sound of the spot I outlines above.

They are behind the grill. If you remove it you'll see that the holes you see in the front (or think you see) are blocked (or not really holes) which obviously distorts the sound quality. My installer (AudioMobile) Installed the Focal mid's at an angle (toward the listener) then mounted the tweeters in the same location with some type of bracket which mounted to the door frame and allowed the tweeters to hang in the same spot as the mid's without touching or obstructing sound. They also opened up those imaginary holes to allow the sound to flow properly. If I can get the grill off I'll post a pic for you. It's a pretty sweet setup.

I see. I'm familiar with what you are talking about. I have had the grill off a number of times. Be careful, there is one plastic clip on the grill that is really easy to break! I would be really interested in seeing your setup.

What's the best way to remove them?

If I had to do it all over again, I would have never removed them because both mine are broken now and I had to epoxy a metal clasp to them to get them to stick in there. The best thing is to just take off the whole door panel if you need to do some serious messing with the 6.5's.

The plastic clip I'm referring to is on the bottom left of the grill. If your'e going to attempt prying it out, I would start with this area and then carefully unfasten the other clips going clockwise. The problem isn't really taking it out..that's easy..it's putting it back in. You have to keep track of exactly where the clips go when reinstalling, if you reallign it correctly it will go in fine..if you have the clips in the wrong spots it will likely crack the flimsy clip.

Oh, I also drilled out about 80% of those stinking holes.. I used a dremel, it was a real pain.

I am thinking of doing a custom job with the covers that came with the Diamond Audio mid-ranges. They have a platic cover with a mesh wire insert. What I want to do is epoxy the plastic cover to the OEM 350Z plastic grill in front. Then use plastic Bondo to seal it up and for a nice contour between the two..then sand and paint it with textured bumper paint. Then cutout the OEM grill from the underside so there is no obstruction from sound.

Way to much work for me! Sounds like it will be pretty awesome though. Be sure to post pic's when finished.
