ever hear of these?
so i went to a local audio shop... I asked about component speakers for the front. They told me that if i dont amplify them, theres no need for components. He told me i should look into orions or PPI's. Any opinions?

I wouldn't get comps off HU power .. agree w/him there. HU power is just too weak .. its essentially 20-30w and you will most likely crank it and send clipped signals which are not good for speakers. Get power (more the merrier, as long as you are careful w/gains) and enjoy overhead for unclipped music
As for PPI or Orion .. uhm no thanks. I've had Utopias 3x now Waiting for my car to install DLS Iridium 3ways.

Dave,
some people choose not to spend $700+ on thier front stage .... therefore PPI and Orion are a valid choice at thier lower price point. However, I would not choose them over the lower Focals, Bostons or some nice Kodas
NY 350Z ... definitely get a separate amplifier like Dave and your shop have stated.
What will you be using for a Head Unit? Is this under strut box the ebay one or Nazar's? What subwoofer and amp will go with that?

BUT! PPI & Orion still arent worthwhile choices, IMO. My main reason w/the comment about PPI/Orion is their decline in quality 'pre-Directed'. There's nothing wrong w/the products, but I feel like a lot of people are paying inflated prices due to the history rather than the present. The value just isn't there anymore.
For the 'lower' priced stuff, I'd rather go w/ the Kodas you mentioned, RE Comps, Alpine 177a/r's, CDT-CL/EFs, and there is this one guy in AZ who seems to have a ton of Aura MR62's which I keep fighting the urge to try out.
I have used/heard everything mentioned above except the Kodas & Auras, and currently have the RE & CDT CL's.

(Why focals 3x? Money -- profited each time. And BTW, bump that to 4x. 165w3 here now That puts me on 180W, 165w X2, and finally finally 3ways.)

yeah dont bother with components if you arent going to amp them... orion used to be an awsome brand then directed bought them out and they went to ****.
The ppi amps are expensive but very nice.

Go USAmps man.....they are $$$$$
But save up.....you will never have a problem...some of my USAmps are like 10 years old and still pupming(and i'm the 3rd owner)
Fight the urge....i've spent thousands replacing and upgrading...and finally learned...it's cheaper to pay for good stuff now than having to replace tweeters and such!
