Default Box in spare well, what to do with the bump?

This is a question for anyone who has built a box into the spare tire well. What did you do to fit the box around the hump that the spare tire screws into?

The options i see now:

Make the bottom out of fiberglass. More time consuming/messy/expensive than mdf but offers the best fit without modifying the car.

Build a mdf box that has an inset portion for the hump. Would help hold the box in place, makes for a weird box.

Mdf box, and cut the hump off. Modifies the car, permanent but allows the for an easier normal shaped box and the sub can be placed in that area, cheap and easy.

Anyone use any of these methods or any others, what were the results, and what would you recommend?

Mine was fiberglassed around the bump.

I fiberglassed over it. The box fits tight and the hump actually helps keep it in place. I fiberglassed everything but the top, but you may want to just do the bottom FG and use MDF for sides and top. Make sure you get your measurements right to allign top with the false floor of trunk

You can also move the box forward, and do the amps behind it... or vice versa.

That's how I did mine. The hump sticks up between the amps and sub, although you wouldn't know it.

This is the route we took with mine. Of course, with aftermarket wheels and the drop on my car, the spare was pretty useless anyway.

Cost of box, Kenwood amp (bridged 240watt), and JL audio 10" sub was under $400

very nice install jreiter. You're lucky to live in SLO too.

trn, you didn't say what size sub you are considering. If you go with 12" like I did you may have other issues with depth avail.

Thx for the responses.

dannichols and jreiter, you both have awesome installs, very clean and stealthy

I'm going to order an Adire Shiva this weekend, its 12" and has a mounting depth of 5.125" which would fit in either a mdf or fiberglass box.

I'm doing this project on a tight budget. I already have a pioneer avh6500dvd and a sony mex-1hd for headunits. I'm planning on ordering:

$125 Adire shiva sub
$150 CDT Cl-61a components http://www.woofersetc.com/product.as...9&1=240&3=3281
Either
$180 Hifonics brutus mono 500w http://www.woofersetc.com/product.as...5&1=296&3=2042

Gonna try just running the components off the headunit for now and gonna see how that works.
$150 Sony amp http://www.woofersetc.com/product.as...3&1=464&3=1887

With the Elemental Design e10o 10" driver I used, we were absolutely at the limit of mounting depth available. I could not have used a deeper speaker at all. I didn't want the raised floor to be any higher than the height of the stock carpet, so that was a limitation. This Z is my daily driver, so the last thing I wanted to do was give up any more trunk space.

The well has a depth of 6" If i build the box out of 7/16" mdf that gives a max depth of about 5.5" (the mounting depth of you e10o) the Adire Shiva that i'm looking at has a depth of 5 1/8" so as far subs in the tire well, i'll have *tons* of extra space Some other subs that i considered that would either fit or require a small spacer were:

4.75" Adire Koda
5.125" Adire Shiva
5.25" IDQ10V2
5.75" JLW3
5.75" IDQ12V2
6" RE SE10

Excellent ideas on subs and location. You will be happy with any, but also consider MB Quart 12" 5.6". Fiberglassing bottom will yeild more depth as will 3/8" MDF ring riser. Good luck

A good list, but I'd probably avoid the JL W3. I found it to be too boomy. Perhaps a W6 or W7 instead, but then you are dealing with very large subs requiring lots of power. I've heard good things about the Shivas and IDQs, so both of those should do nicely.

Great installs jreiter and dannichols. I love the stealth look, keeps wandering eyes at bay. Your installs have given me another option in terms of building a system without sacrificing the limited space that I have. Have yall heard anything about the JL W1V2? They advertise that it requires shallow mounting depths and very compact enclosure requirements. Thanks

I haven't seen any info on it. My feeling is, since you have the space (width-wise) in the trunk, why not go with a 12". Just make sure it has about 5.75" or less depth or else you may have to use a spacer ring or build the trunk floor up higher. One of the guys on this forum has dual 12's in the trunk, try to find that post he did a great job.

I haven't heard the V2, but I always found the W0 and W1 to be too muddy and boomy. I like tighter, more accurate response, and those speakers weren't quite doing it for me. Perhaps the V2 is different, though...
