Default Wtf?

I went to inquire about hooking up some component speakers (JL or MB Quart) to my JL 300/4 amp and the install guy told me that my head unit (sony 4500x) would need a high-low adapter because it only has one pre out (taken up by the 500/1 I'm running). He recommended that I get a whole new head unit (alpine) because the high-low adapter is crap basically. Is he right or is he just tryin to get me to spend some more $?

He is right and he is trying to get you spend more money.

You do have an option, granted a...limited one per say.

Run jumper RCAs from the 500.1 to your 4 channel or Jumper RCAs from you 4 channel to the 500.1.

The draw backs:

No sub control

Thats about it.

Get a new HU. Sony HUs suck anyway.

Any recommendations for a Alpine head unit?

I need enough inputs/aux/pre outs, etc for:
JL 500/1
JL 300/4
Alpine 5.8 monitor
I-Pod

There is another less expensive option. You could run the one set of pre-outs to an electronic crossover and split the signal. A good EC even with only one input will actually provide you with higher voltage outputs and still leave you control of the individual channels. I run one in my car even though my HU has 3 pre-outs. I don't trust even Alpine HUs to correctly cut the frequencies how I see fit. A nice good quality EC will run you anywhere from $100-$350 but can be mounted anywhere. Heres a link to a really nice one..
