there such thing as a self powered sub for cars? is that a bad idea? anyone done this?

Its fine
go with the infinity system, they tend to be a bit better quality.

Has anyone tried the Clarion SRV303 7" 64W Amplified Compact Subwoofer
or the
Kenwood KSC-SW1 W x 2 Subwoofer Box?
Those both look really wimpy.

the kenwood is wimpy ... the Infinity is the way to go
