Well, for our cars the best place for the sub is "rear facing" so under the strut brace is really the best location and you don't lose that much space.
That said, I know several have used the factory location for a sub upgrade and are happy with it. I believe for best results you'll need to build som type of enclosure for it though.

Preferably yes. They are not in an optimal spot. I really don't think the replacement size matters all that much. Mine are installed in the factory door location with my woofers.

JL audio now makes an adaptor/interface that allows you to use any factory headunit, custom equalize the signal and hook up to aftermarket amps and speakers. It's on their website. It's called the CleanSweep.

Speed: I saw this from another site and it looks promising for those who don't want to change the h/u. From what I gather though, the stock h/u (in my case Blose) is the source of problem of crappy sound in the first place. Good idea if you want to half do it I guess.
