Custom iPod Install in my Z
Havn't posted for a long time, so whats up. I am working on a custom iPod install in my Z. The install is with an alpine 9847 headunit with the alpine iPod interface. The iPod will sit in the center dash where the ashtray/change cubby is, over here there will be a custom dock that was cut out from the real iPod dock and bondo-ed heavily. I have pictures of the work in progress. Tell me what you guys think....ill have the final install pictures done tommorow or sunday.
So far so good, but how secure is the i-pod in that mount? With just the bottom edge in the mount, I assume its just gravity holding it in there. One good turn and its flying i-pod time? Unless there is a positive latch in the mount, you might want to rethink this a bit.
Thats really tight! i have been trying to do somthing like that but it never worked can u tell me the steps you did

The back side of the ipod dock is heavily bondo-ed the stuff is on preety strong. I had to do that because the original ipod dock would not work with the ipod interface. I thought of superglue and many other adhesives, but worried about heat a lot since im in the houston/college station, tx area. Right now the bondo is serving as a good reinforcement for the many years of force that is going to go down on the ipod charger. Thats what lead me to choose bondo as a final option since it basically is like cement holding the ipod charger in place.
No I dont think it will get in the way of the shifter, because I have already ran speaker wires under the shifter and through the sides, I have had no problems yet. Here is pictures of the back side of the center dash. Also there is much dremeling and sanding left.

Oh I get it. No i dont think it would be a problem because I tested it first before I went along with the idea of putting it there, I also thought of putting it where the seat heater buttons would be, but that didn't work out b/c it was too far back. I dont do much driving in the city but a lot of long driving, and its usually in 6th gear anyways on the long drives, so no shifting involved.
I just put the silicone in the edges of the main plate to hold the plate in place. This is going to give the edges a clear finishing. Then later, I am going to go over that with bondo also. Here is a picture of that also.
I took the original ipod dock and had to take it apart and use the base frame of it basically. However, that frame would not fit in the change cubby, so I had to modify the original dock and dremel off one of the sides, so that it would fit That is the only way I could get the perfect shape for the iPod to sit in the car
I have to admit that the install looks real cool, very nice. Personally though, I think I'd be hitting the IPod with my arm when shifting. I like my wife's set up in her Z. She has the Alpine 9847 head unit and she had the IPod interface plug/wire routed into her cubby so that the IPod is hidden from view (which is nice since it won't attract attention). We didn't see any need to keep the IPod accessible since the Alpine allows you to control all the functions thru it.
Nevertheless, looks great.
