Default Why can't the OEM nav. be dealer installed?

I didn't order it on my Touring because I don't think I'll get much use out of it where I am now, but I might like to have it when I move to CA in a couple years. I know there are aftermarket systems as good as, if not better than the stock set-up, but I kind of like to keep things stock. I don't see why it couldn't be added later by the dealer. The extra wiring neccessary would probably be a pain, but complete removal and installation instructions down to the GPS antenna are included in the service manual. If nothing else, you should be able to buy the components and have an outside installer do the work. Any thoughts?

my dealer promised me that it could be done.

I took delivery of my car w/o it and they proimised to add it later.

However, they could not. Appears that the car must be PREWIRED to accept the nav. It hooks into the stereo harness and all. The cost to rip everything out and rewire would be prohibitive.
They installed an Alpine DVD system w/ a 6.5 inch screen PERFECTLY in the stock cubby.

Other systems to look at are the kenwood touchscreen and pioneer (play dvds and has voice recog).

Lucky for me I paid $1200 for my NAV option, but the ALPINE cost them $2500 installed.

I would be surprised if we don't see an aftermarket harness in the near future from someone willing to go through the piles of electroics paperwork to figure out which will go with what. . .

After all, its just pesky little 1's and 0's, right?
