Default Sub in Bose stock location

Ok, I went to a local car audio place yesterday looking into getting some stuff for my Z. I already have a nice Kenwood Amp and Boston 10" sub from my old truck that I am planning on using. I was chatting with the manager at the car audio place, throwing around ideas, and he mentioned that he has heard of some people buying the "baffle" that goes in the location where the Bose sub would be in the higer end Z's and that people have mounted their own subs in there. Has anyone tried this and if so, how does it sound?

Mounted mine there...not the optimum location but I needed all the cargo space for travelling. Installed dynamat and a fiberglass unported box for the 10" sub. No complaints on the way it sounds.

Cool, thanks for the info. So you did a custom fiberglass box? I was thinking of that, but the guy at the audio place mentioned how some people have purchased the housing / baffle that Nissan uses for the Bose sub and just used that.

I am no audio guru, but that Bose sub, which IMO is a POS, was designed to work in free air, with two very small opposing magnets. I would check the manufacturer's specs on the sub you have and see if they recommend a specific size enclosure, ported or unported.

Ya, I agree, that Bose sub is a joke. The sub I have is a Boston Acoustics GS1000. It is pretty shallow (size wise) and only needs abotu .75 - 1 cu ft of airspace. Ill look into it. Thanks for the info/help man.

I've driven around with a 10" sub mounted in a box in the stock location for a year. I just removed it and put an under-the-strut box instead. Night and day difference in base presence. You just can't get audio-phile base in the stock location. I dynamatted it, sound proofed it, ect . . . never got it there.

+1. Sound is going to be superior in the rear hatch.

Ya, I kinda thought that too. Im thinking of having a custom box fabed up out of some mdf and carpeted in the same color that the car is done it and have it "hidden" under the rear strut tower brace.

We have mounted subs here on probally 50 z's.

If you acutally build the box inside there and utilize all the air space and makesure it is sealed up it will sound awesome. We do 8w7's in there all the time. My personal fav is taking out the glove compartment on the other side and doing a 8w7 on each side with a Amp in the back cargo area. Doing it this way you do not get the hatch rattle.

I was not able to get my Infiniti 10" Kappa Perfect to fit in the stock location (mounted like the Bose sub is). The magnet was too large. It would hit the bottom of the compartment. That was before I added any MDF. So I had to have the sub firing upward, which only allowed 1-2" worth of airspace between the sub and metal.

Maybe an 8" works, or a more shallow 10", but in my case with my choice of sub, it wasn't and option.

I just ripped out my stereo due to this problem, the only way to use the stock location is to use a free air sub. Which is what the bose unit is, there are a couple free air subs but not many and they normally are more $$.

What do you use to build the box in there? Fiberglass?

I had a custom fiberglass enclosure made with fiberglass and the amps installed in the false bottom under the glove box. everything sounds great with my kappa perfects everywhere else. The install came at a price the sub the gave me a discount on but it was $850 out the door (everything else I had bought my self or owned already.
