I think you'll have better luck with the thin mat on top.. I don't see it blocking much sound. But the thick mat..I wouldn't go there :-) That thing is a heavy ****.

I use a steel Audiobahn grill with about 2" which actually seems to shallow.. I here the it driver banging the grill at times.
