Default post your trunk floor sub install

im looking for some stealthy ideas for my sub install

i want it in the trunk, i will probally have my amp there too,

i did a search but only came up with spdkils

i think this was pretty cool, mainly cause once the mat goes over it you would never know its there, also it sits pretty flush, and looks really good

this under strut box is once of the best i have seen, it just looks so neat and tidy, but at the moment im leaning towards the flush under floor look,

so any pics would be greatly appreciated, so i cant look at differant ideas..

spdkils i hope you dont mind me using your floor pic
i have no idea whos the other pic is i have had it on my computer for a long time

my boot looks pretty similar to the 1st pic u posted

its not stealth though, and it wasnt easy.......or cheap

i didnt think it would be so difficult, but theres alot of skill building a box like that under the strut brace, getting the volume right for the sub, then ensuring everything is mm tight so it doesnt rattle

just thinking man, wouldnt putting carpet over the sub muffle the sound?

have you got your car back ??????????
how does it look?
pics..?

carpet over a sub wont affect it because of the low frequencies the sub puts out.

if it were mids or highs its totally differant

Zed, look up my old posts I have a 12" MBQ in the trunk. It's not difficult with fiberglass, the one major obstacle will be mounting depth. If your looking for flush with trunk liner then you will only have about 6" top mount depth. The driver will also sit more flush and you will get more depth if you use an extra MDF ring..this is because the trunk liner and carpet will add about 1/2" of hight you can raise the sub out to match.

Your second pic looks like someone got around the depth issue by creating his own liner. This will be a little tricky because you will need to make the underside foam pieces match the hight of this new liner..not too difficult though.

I wouldn't recommend keeping a carpet over the driver..Most subs like mine have a high excursion factor and pop out a good 1" or more when driven hard. Your carpet is gonna be jumping around..if its the thick Nissan carpet it wil create an even bigger problem. Just cut a hole in the stock liner and carpet or make your won liner with a hole and use a 2" tall grill cover. You will then have most of your trunk space and actually the grill will help prevent things from sliding around back there.

Here's what I meant. My post is halfway down. you can see the foam pieces under the carpet. These would have to be raised if you want to modify the liner depth..so the liner sites flush on both sides.

My sub is actually almost flush with the floor, maybe 1/4" above it. The gril makes it look in the picture like it is sticking out further I am sure but it's just the fact that the grill is 1.5" tall. This is necessary as I said since the driver cone will pop out when playing..and at times I've even had it hitting the metal grill (which isn't a good thing)

You can use my pic all you want...

I can take another pic, but I've also got 2 amps in there... they are stacked with air space between them to keep the temps down.

Because my box is wide... I had to remove the foam sides... So under all the pretty vinal it doesn't look quite so clean.

Here are a few of mine. I had to raise the floor about 1 inch, because the driver was so deep. Once I put the factory cover over it, pretty much looks stock. I still put stuff back there with the cover on.

gprro1,

These amps are decent but not as great as some of the older models. Sorry, I don't have the spl measurement since the system got installed. But then again, I'm not into audio competition or anything in that nature -- as long as it sounds clean.

not exactly stealth or on the trunk floor, but here's mine. I apologize for the large pics...too lazy to resize.

I'm working on finishing this up right now...

Going this route is totally stealth and 100% cargo space left. A couple of other members have done this a long time ago. You will have to settle for 1 10" and it will have to be one that will not measure too deep for the space available. My amp is going in the empty space behind the seat (stock Bose sub space).

Good idea. I hadn't seen this concept in older posts. Are you going to cut a hole through the stock carpet and trunk liner?

They are probably in the archives, I've been planning this forever...

I am going to see how it goes. I know I will probably have to cut a semicircle in the false floor that pulls out (plastic over spare). I've got both the factory carpet and the optional thick Z carpet liner so I don't know. As long as it does not make any funny rattling noises I think it will be OK. Only running 150W to it and the nice Boston Acoustics grille that comes with the sub should have accounted for max. travel.

Wow those are from awhile back. Great ideas, I'm sure you will be very happy.

I noticed you went with a recessed design. This is a little different than those pictured no? Was this to allow the stock carpet to sit totally flat. I still don't see how some people are getting away with carpet over the driver. My sub hits with a 2" - 3" excursion that would have any mat or carpet bouncing like a magic carpet.

Personally, I think a lot of people start out with the stealth idea to hide under a capet, but then switch because the driver needs to move freely. This is why I used an external MDF RING on my box to RAISE the driver up higher instead of recessing. This also allows you to use a deeper driver magnet..otherwise my 12" would have been limited to a 6" depth...

I think Xmax on a 10.5LF is about 1.5". The new Boston G2 and G5 are more like 2" and 3" respectively. But the basket is also about 2-3" deeper and wouldn't allow me to fit them in my design. I have 2 3/4" rings glued together and cut down past the glue joint. Probably about 1" - 1-1/8" recess for the speaker mounting ring. It will end up pretty flush. The Boston grilles are domed shaped and the very center seems like it will sit up 1/16" to 1/8" or so above box level.
The carpet won't sonically impact the music I don't think but if this sub moves enough air I will have trouble. maybe the weight of the thick Nissan mat will actually help me
