So I gather that
Eclipse AVN5435 : has NAV, retail $1.6 to $1.8K...
Eclipse AVN5495 : above + 30Gb HDD
Pioneer AVIC-D1 : has NAV, around $1K
Kenwood DDX7017 : DVD player, around 800 or 900
Kenwood DDX8017 : DVD player, around $1K... (whats the diff??)
If you don't need/want NAV, the bottom two are about the same, but if you want Nav, you have to go up, and the cheap choice is the Pioneer, right?
Did I miss something?

Again, iPod.
Eclipse doesn't support iPod and others do.
Eclipse price range is ebay for about 1400-1500. Retail stores go for about 1550-1700.

The NAV/DVDROM is like $600-750 for the Kenwood 8017 I think ... and yes, you can watch movies and listen to music at the same time (though you wouldn't get audio for the movie obviously) ... and you can run the movie on both screens at the same time as well ... bunch of options ... very flexible ...

I have the AVIC-D1 with NavTraffic and love it, it is very detailed and accurate. It has a DVD ROM drive aswell as a CD drive, but it WILL NOT play DVDs. As my winter project I am moving the D1 to the upper cubby, getting my hands an a '03 cubby door, and installing a JVC CD/DVD player in the doubble din opening....pics to come

I have the 5435, it is a great unit. I wanted the Pioneer, but for the price 1300-1599 it didn't have a dvd player. I went with the Eclipse, Eclipse products are very high end! They are actually the orginators for slide out monitors and navigation.
