Eclipse is one of the best brand for sound quality and it looks very subtle. i think thats main deal of this unit.
but pioneer and kenwood have nice integration with ipod which eclipse doesn't have.
also mp3 cd titles/artists etc. shows very poorly on eclipse unit (no artist name, and about 8-10 letters only on the title).

and about the nav, i like eclipse nav the best so far. its the same nav system lexus uses.

so far i'm happy with my eclipse how it sounds and how it looks in the car.
if ipod support ipod and shows very nice id3tag from the screen, it will be perfect.

anyways, i bought an 8017...i see no point in a flip out - 1) you have a double din, use it and 2) once flipped out, it sticks out and looks out of place...unless you need that extra din for something else, maybe a DSP or center channel then you might as well use the entire double din

Ok, please correct me if I am wrong, but the Eclipse and Pioneer have NAV, while the Kenwood units don't, right?

So I gather that

Eclipse AVN5435 : has NAV, retail $1.6 to $1.8K...
Eclipse AVN5495 : above + 30Gb HDD
Pioneer AVIC-D1 : has NAV, around $1K

Kenwood DDX7017 : DVD player, around 800 or 900
Kenwood DDX8017 : DVD player, around $1K... (whats the diff??)

If you don't need/want NAV, the bottom two are about the same, but if you want Nav, you have to go up, and the cheap choice is the Pioneer, right?

Did I miss something?

the Kenwood does not have the built in NAV, it's much like the stock system - the NAV unit is a separate DVD-Rom unit that will fit in where the stock NAV goes...that way you don't have to constantly take out the NAV DVD if you watch a regular DVD movie

the difference with the 8017 vs. the 7017 is a lot of small things like 5V gold preouts and DTS/Dolby Digital processing built in...i bought it because it looks better - it is black all around unlike the 7017 that has a silver trim...i also got the 8017 for $899 + $749 for the NAV unit with microphone and talk switch

Which also places the nav display up higher? DOes the nav unit has it's own display? or is it a sealed box that fits in the upper hole but you see the nav info in the 7017/8017 display?

Yeah, sounds like the 8017 is an improved (details) version of the 7017.

Found my own answer. No, it is just a black box with the DVD rom in it. So it could actually go anywhere (as long as the cable reaches)...

BTW is the Kenwood KNADV4100 the Nav unit add on.

Here's another thing that apparently only the Kenwood can do...I emailed most manufacturers looking for this functionality and only the Kenwood will allow you to project the NAV info onto a 2nd screen that you can place where the stock NAV screen goes...that way it's up higher, in better eye view...you can do this by hooking the video output of the DVD-Rom to the monitor while also hooking up the regular connection to the 8017...you'd still have to control the NAV with the 8017 but at least you can view NAV info on the top screen while doing other stuff on teh 8017 screen
