Default Stock Nav & aftermarket stereo?

Quick question, I'd like to get a Perf Z with the Nav system. Is it possible to change out the stock HU at a later date or am I stuck with the stock HU b/c of the Nav? I tried doing a search, but tons of threads came back about installing aftermarket stereo, but couldn't find the info I'm looking for.

Why Nav? Cause the wife's gonna want to drive it. We men don't need nav system b/c we always know where we're going. Yeahh...

Moderator, if this thread is dup. Please close and my apologies.

Default Stpck NAV with Aftermarket HU

Here is the skinny. The NAV spits out a higher voltage signal than normal line inputs. I beleive normal line input is about 1.44 Volts, while the NAV is 6V. So, whatever you are trying to wire into make sure it can handle that type of input. Also, the factory HU has an interrupt feature (like a car kit for a cell phone), which essentially lowers the volume and allows the NAV voice to come over.

When I drove witht he NAV voice on, I found it annoying in most cases. But now after a few weeks of driving, I think I want it back in one way shape or form. What annoyed me was how it interrupts music. It would be nice, I thought, if you could change to a "NAV" audio source, if you wanted voice cues.

There are two ways to accomplish this.
1) Wire the nav output to a low poer FM transmitter, and tune your radio to the freq.
2) Wire the nav output to an aux input on your aftermarket HU. (if you headunit allows for this)
Wiring this in requires your headunit accept the 6V signal, or you need to reduce (normalize) the input.

Skidazzle has posts on using a seperate channel he installed in the spot where the sunglass holder is. I want to use that spot for the radar detector display.

Some Alpine head units allow aux channel inputs, and accept signals that strong. You just need an aux/ai-net adaptor. This is the method I am pursuing. I'll keep you posted on progress. Look for the thread entitled "Twin Stereo Install"

There shouldn't be any problems, since all you need to do with the aftermarket stereo is to make sure the Nav's audio is connected, then you can still hear the directions.

Actually, from what I've read and researched from the service manual, that the Navi audio is line level, and when the audio is active, there is a 6V logic trace that is used to trip the mute on the stock/Bose system.

What I plan on doing, and this is basically what Skidazzle's installer did, is take a 6VDC relay and use it to trip the common to ground when the 6V logic is there. The gound output is fed to the audio interrupt on your aftermarket HU.

I plan on doing a schematic once I get the relays in and can test. They're on order now..
