Default Closest Matching Headunit

What is the closest matching headunit to the z's interior lighting. The only specifications I have are for it to have aux in. Hopefully I can find something fairly cheap <200.

It would be badass if someone was talented enough to do a LED conversion of the clusters, gauges, etc. I know i seen someone convert it to red, but if they could convert it to say the blue of the CDA-9851 Alpine headunit, that would be awesome.. always like the bluish lighting, like the VW have..

http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_WX-7700MDX.html

It is the Sony WX-7700MDX. You can get it on eBay for around $590 shipped, and you will not need a frequency converter if you get the worldband tuner. The only thing is you will not be able to get most AM stations, but not many people really care about AM anymore. Another plus is that you can actually use an XM tuner on it.
As for the lighting, you can adjust it to match the dash perfectly. Click on the link and try out the illumination control simulator, and see for yourself. Not a bad deck, and a plus if you are into minidiscs.

I currently have one of the aux in fm modulator things, but it sounds like garbage. I believe the one I have is made by audiovox.

I think they're out of stock, but www.discountcarstereo.com is not out of stock. The 03-04 base head unit has an external cd changer plug on the back of the head unit. this piece will convert that to an aux. input. Once installed, you will hit your cd button twice to get to the aux. input.

mine just came in today. i'm installing it on my 03 bose head unit tomorrow.

Sony makes horrible car audio products. They look pretty, but that's about it. I think that radio looks like a pair of eye glasses.

To each their own, and I don't know if I would go so far as to say they make horrible products. Sure, there are better products out on the market, but for day to day use, they aren't all that bad. Besides, the stuff Sony sells in Japan and the stuff they sell here in the US is not exactly the same product. Ditto for Alpine, Pioneer, and others. I still have yet to see amplifiers with fiber optic inputs readily available here, and have been told one too many times that they didn't exist. I'd say over 99% of the people here have never seen the really good products that are available, and might junk what they have in the name of competition level SQ.

Try looking at the JVC KD-AR860, I just bought that unit.

Nice orange illumination.

LED swaps are not difficult. A quality soldering iron with a micro tip, lots of practice soldering, a steady hand, and the LEDs of your choice (in the correct size for each position) from http://www.oznium.com/ would do the trick.

The most difficult part of doing an LED swap is that you find that some lights are LEDs, and some and regular filament bulbs. Most, but not all of the LED-LED swaps will be plug-n-plug. But sometimes some LEDs, and all filament bulbs, require the addition of a resistor between one LED lead and the circuit-board. Without this resistor the LED will overheat and die in minutes or less. Making all that fit can be a challenge.

But this is one of those mods that is more about time and patience than specialized skills.

I did this on my Vette. It's a fun and rewarding project because it changes the character of the car. You can even create illumination "zones" on the dash by mixing super-bright and regular LEDs in the right locations. Take my advice though...don't go crazy with the super-brights. Looks great for night photos but a long night-time interstate drive can wear harder on the eyes with too many super-brights. (oh ya..sometimes the factory dimmer does not work well on LEDs..something else to consider).

Cheers,
-Smoky
