Default $5 do it yourself door speaker pods

I was bored the other day so I decided to make myself a pair of door speaker mounts. Tools used: high speed disc sander, router(jigsaw will work),drill.

I Glued two pieces of 3/4" mdf together to get a 1.5" thick piece of mdf.

I traced the factory speaker cover and then added 3/4" all the way around for a mounting lip.

Basically sanded , test fit, and sanded until it followed the curve of the door panel.

Each side took about 30 minute of going back and forth sanding and test fitting. I cut my center hole out then vinyled using a spray adhesive.
I plan on screwing them to the door panel from the back.

anyway, just thought I'd share

Fantastic work man! Very nice and inexpensive alternative to some high dollars applications. How are you securing them to the door? How are you going to seal them?

Y'know, if those are effective, you could probably make some pretty decent money selling to those of us who don't want to spend $250 on something like that...

I figure I'll screw them on from the back of the door for starters. If they don't seem secure enough I'll pull the vinyl off and put four bolts in, counter sink the heads, and re-vinyl. Then I'll mark where the bolt holes need to be, pre-drill thru the panel, then add lock washers and tighten them down.

I'm hoping when I screw/bolt them down the vinyl will act as a gasket. I'll post some pics once I get everything mounted.

thanks mike

I wouldn't worry about the gasket action as you're going to have to seal the entire door panel in place to the door frame ... not good. For those looking for seals there are 6.5" foam rubber weather proofing cups that you can put in behind the speaker ... again not a perfect seal.

I'm not feelin' it man. They kind of look like earmuffs. If they were more seamless then I could see it but they totally look like after thoughts...the fiberglass look is a lot cleaner for example. Not tryin' to be harsh, I respect working with your hands just thought you might want a little constructive criticism.

I agree, they are different and fiberglass does look a lot cleaner. Once I get the speakers in and see how they sound and look I'll make the decision whether they stay or go.

thanks mike
