Default for all you carputer and electronics experts???

Hey everyone,

I have an old laptop that would take more money to fix than it would be worth so it has just been sitting here, but i was thinking of an idea. I was thinking of taking the lcd screen from the laptop and fabricating something for my trunk lid in my G. Although i am not an expert at stuff like this i want to learn. I want to learn everything i can. So my questions are:

1. First of all, what does it take to wire the laptop lcd to my DD tv up front? Any and all information about anything at all that you know whether directly related or not will help.

2. Are there any experts out there that wouldn't mind corresponding with me from time to time in order for me to learn what i can from you and ask questions along the way of any electronics endeavors i undertake?

Thank you very much for all ofyour time.

-Cameron

Well, I'm definitely no expert, but I can answer your question.

You would have to take out the screen and the video driver for the laptop LCD. The video driver is the hardware that takes the input and translates that into what each pixel must do to present the input. You would also need some sort of video processor to take the component video source (from your TV out composite video) and translate it into something the video driver can understand. I am not sure how proprietary laptop screens get or what not, but it could be as easy as buying the video->digital source converter and wiring that directly to the video driver and that'd be it. Or it could be more difficult if they don't have universal types of video drivers etc. check out digikey.com for parts.

You're always welcome to post questions here. Everyone learned from someone.

Having never cracked on of my laptops open ... there's going to be circuits on the motherboard that drive the display. I'd also guess that it's like a regular LCD computer display in that it takes seperate red, green, and blue signals plus possibly a sync signal - your DVD sends out composite NTSC video which requires demodulation of the three color signals from the one that the DVD puts out ... those aren't cheap.

Way too much work than it's worth as you can pick up 19" LCD displays for $190 and a tiny 15" monitor for $140. At least there you're dealing with a complete system and then can have real plug-in connectors to connect to - you'll still need a composite to VGA (RGB) converter and an AC power supply. Better yet get an 12 DC LCD television and be done with the converters and AC supply all together.
