Default Garim StreetPilot III -- Anyone have one?

Garim StreetPilot III -- Anyone have one?

I saw a good review of this unit in a motorcycle magazine and they loved it, but bike riders have fewer choices since they need a small/portable unit.

Anyone have this one? How do you like it?

With a street price of around $700-$800 it is an attractive alternative.

I have the SP III on my goldwing - it is an excellent product. I guess it depends on what you are going to use it for that will determine if it is the right one for you.
Some of the things I have used it for on my bike (I take VERY long rides >3000 miles every year):
'look up' the services (gas stations / restaurants) at the next intersections coming up.
have it set the route for me to a specific destination.
follow small roads that don't even appear on my maps when just 'wandering'.
the audio output is fed into my intercomm system on the bike & into my helmet.
I have been able to determine exactly where I am on the road & then be able to figure out where i am going to call it quits for the day - & call ahead to make reservations at a motel for the night.
I use it for accurate speed indications.
I use the 'breadcrumb' feature to retrace my route back.
It's pretty cool!

It is actually called Garmin. I've seen two or three models from $499-$999. I hear they are pretty good but I have no first hand experience with them.

See one here!

I've the the SP III Deluxe which comes with unlocked national map and more memory. It's a great product, but make no mistake, it's not quite as nice as a high end in-car or alpine/pioneer. Then again, it's a whole lot cheaper, and you can take it from vehhicle to vehicle, which is why I got it.

It comes with a bean bag mount that you can place on the dash. This works well since the underside of the "legs" of the bean bag mount are a high friction scuba type material, which keeps it from sliding all over the place.

The other option is it comes with 3m type sticky tape that the SPIII can be mounted to.

Finally, there is a trick install over on audiworld.com. I'm going to be doing this one on my Audi allroad.

I have a Garmin GPS V...very nice units. Paid $254 for at Amazon with discount 2-3 years ago...I think it's $400+ now.

Nice but where would you put it in the Z?

I was going to get a remote antenna, hide it and connect mine to a computer...hopefully it will work how I want.

That installation is OK for say, a rental car or something, but I certainly wouldn't want that look for my Z! Didn't someone find a way to fit it into the nav space? I can't remember who it was but I thought I remember some pics.

I have a Garmin GPS V that I use on my VFR.

It works great as a bike GPS, but it's a PITA to use in the car. It will become my bike only unit when my Z arrives.
