I am not a huge fan of alpine subs. We sell them at our shop and they are the only ones that come back burnt up. For the 300 that price range I could get you a Awesome JL 10 W6 that would sound great in your car.

you could probably make a pretty decent Infinity setup with Kappas and Perfects... run 'em off an alpine amp.

By the way, I'm selling my HU. I took it out of the box and flipped through the owners manual but never installed it. I've got all the packaging etc... Haven't even taken off that little plastic protective film on the front of it. Let me know if you're interested.

Here's a link to the manufacturers website.

only problem... u can pick up the alpines for under 100 bucks... how are you gonna say no to that? for the price i would say stick with them. of course everyone will say ebay prices.. blah blah u will get jyped... but then u can go to china town in new york they actually match the ebay prices and are authorized retailers and they will even warrantty them at that low price. pretty nice if u live around new york.

i like JL and all... but honestly for a college student like myself who isnt such a sound quality enthusiast... Type R's will work pretty well.

JL is too expensive... for the small difference in sound its not worth it IMO. Im prob gonna get 2 10 in Type R's and will be happy with it

Only thing i like about JL is their stealtbox. If only we could buy it without the subs and put in other subs... cuase 700 bucks for that is crazy =\

Small difference? You definitely have not heard JL's in a good setup. I could set off my brothers car alarm with my 2 12w6v2's with my windows up from 30 feet away.

edit: Also, even when I was back in highschool I could not stand the sound of cheap subs that people would use. Why waste your (not you directly) money if your setup isnt going to sound good?

+1 Well setup JL Sub setups outperform many of the products out there.

I'm not a JL fanboy--but they make AWESOME products...

of course, any well installed "decent" sub can sound good. To me, no matter what age I've always wanted audio fidelity.

I love how everyone assumes that Alpine is crap. Realize that 75% of alpines you hear is sold at CC and installed in a 40Hz box .... yeah .. they sound like chit ... credit that to CC.

Alpine's Type R, while not as linear as the "new" JL W6v2, will more than hold its own against an older W6 when installed correctly.

Jim (dislikes alpine subs, but respects a good product)

i agree, 1500 can really really do some nice things, i once did a car about 5 years back with only about 1500 in RETAIL value and labor and it won a few local sq comps hehe including 2nd class at carlisle

it was: midline pioneer headunit, about $300 bucks
crystal 6.5" comps in kicks $450 total
mtx 4 channel cheaper amp, the one reated at 4x25 lol $400
IDQ12 $200
just a basic box and install

beat out cars that had three to five times the money.

all in a vw gti early 90s

Here's my "on the cheap" $600 stereo upgrade: Link

I really like my Type-R 10". Depending on how I have the amp tuned, I can have it boom (which I hate) or pound (which I like). Performance is great and the only reason I have mine tuned "soft" is because I don't like my car rattling. Overall it's nice but if you can afford something more....do it. A nice set of components would be more worth the $.

The only downside of the 2005+ model Type-R is that they made it bigger. As you can see from my pics, I had to put it in sideways in order for the terminals to fit in the box. Bummer.

vw gte...hatch backs have the advantage of pushing more open air...

like what most have said here, JL's will be the best choice next to RE xXx 10's, but those are tough to touch with a price already in mind. I've spent about 10K in stereo components between two cars...... and looking for another 2K here on the Z...go with the type r sub, get a clean sounding amp...ive seen zapco go cheap used...and they're not burned up. Good luck, just get a decent shop, that's the biggest thing.

What do you guys think of Digital Design subs? You think they are overpriced or worth the money?
