Let's say this is your infinity kappa perfect 6.5" component for the front doors

And let's say that while installing your drill slips and puts a nice little hole in the rubber surrounding the silver cone. How screwed up is it going to sound? The silver is ok, there just a hole in the rubber. FUBAR'd? I won't have my amps hooked up for a couple days so I won't know for sure until I hook it up, just wondering.

interesting.... a quick search showed that rubber cement may be tried and if not apparently a bunch of companies sell replacement kits. Might have to give this a whirl.
Thanks for the responses!

ouch! low blow! i didn't mind the kappas in my pathfinder... should sound a little better in the z. i loved the boston acoustics i had in my last one though.
we shall see.
we shall see.
As a sales & installation manager at Circuit City, It happens. Rubber cement works great. With a hole in the surround, it really wont effect the sound quality. Just as long as it's not in the cone.

nothing against circuit city or major retailers ...
but anybody who pays retail and gets their install done at those places deserve what's coming to them....
if you want it done right, either DIY or go to an audio specialist that does these things... you always get what you pay for...
btw, DIY is always more expensive than a shop (if you count the hours you wasted)..

The only way I'd ever let Big Box stores work on my
car is if I get to help. That's the only way you will
know if they mess up your car, to have a chance of
replacing a drilled speaker, etc. A nice Big Box Installer
*didn't listen to my advice* of pulling the speaker cable
to snap the door connector and broke the connector
when jamming speaker wire and bending its pins!
I spent a couple hours fixing it for him, and that was
the last time a Big Box store will ever touch my Z.

Give a call to Infinity's customer service, you can buy the replacement part.
Honestly, this will really only affect your SQ based on your installation and crossover points.
If you run these crossed anywhere above 120Hz and don't put good power to them ... you'll never notice it. If you run a lot of power in these and try and play them low, you will have a bad situation.

Me, i wouldnt let anyone work on my car, not even a audio specialist. I may ask questions at the audio specialist, but no one touchs my baby when it comes to audio, performance upgrades.
I think every installer has done this at some point....next time use a screw driver and tighten by hand...

In the past I've used electrical tape and rubber cement, and applied it very carefully. I've had this happen twice, both times worked. Good luck.

For one, you dont go to Best Buy or Circuit City to get work done on a car like a Z. My friend's shop actually takes in custom jobs from Circuit City that they cannot do (i.e. fiberglass and custom installs). More than usual, these places have teenagers or installers that are new to the industry. You have to pay for quality. I recomend shopping around to stereo shops and look at examples of their work, especially work done on Zs.
