Default Amp Dilemma, Input Welcomed...

Alright guys, here is my situation. I have a connection that is able to get the new (aka lower quality) PPI amps at a substantial discount. The cost for a 1000 watt or more mono sub and 800 watt two channel amp would be less than $300 with amp kits. However, I am slightly leaning towards a cleaner amp such as the Elemental Design series. Namely the Nine2X and their sub amp as well. However, that cost would be closer to $600 for everything. So, would you guys go for the discount or feel that the double cost is worth it?

I would seriously doubt that you would hear any difference between the two amps...at least not a 300 dollar difference.

300 dollars for an adiquete sub amp is a good deal

i disagree
hes taling about spending 300 bucks on two amps not jsut a sub.
i run a ed nine.1 and am pleased with it.
i dont know much about the ppi amps but i would hesitate to buy anyhting that is that cheap.
only time ive gotten a good deal on an amp like that was for a low end jbl amp that was a refurb but still had a full 1 yr warranty
plus ed has three yr waranty, and combo discoubnts, and forum discounts

edit:what the heck are you planning on running with an 800 watt 2 channel amp?

heres what im looking at

ppi 1000/1
max 1000 watts
cea power 185x1
addtl power 495x1
thd>.1
snr>70

(so much for your thousand watt amp)

ppi 800/2
max 800
cea 125x2
addtl power 220x2
thd>.1
snr>88

what is this additional power they keep referring to?

ed nine.1
1200x1 at 1 ohm rms power rated at 12.5v
snr>95
thd % not listed but im sure its easy enough to find on the interweb
315 shipped with forum discount for a true 1200 watts

nine.2x
dont feel like listing everything.

why not just run the nine.2? why do you ant so much power for your comps?

on a sidenote though the nine.1 is backordered but i know for sure you could get one from caraudio.com or sounddomain.com in the classifieds. and as long as you get a receipt (the original) the warranty is transferable

Ah I see now.

But regardless, PPI is no longer the company they used to be but the amps dont sound like total trash...like pyramid or something.

ED stuff is really nice also but heck. Those PPI amps will sound just fine as long as there is nothing wrong with them...

Gotta agree with Ahsmo on this one. I have pre-direct PPI amps and they're great. Once directed took over they decreased in quality and made themselves much more accessible to mid-quality retailers (i.e. Best Buy, Ultimate Electronics), but the quality is still good. I would compare to high cost RF, or Mid level Alpine (that may be generous, but close). For the price you're getting it's worth it. If you paying full retail, then ED would be much better.

well for both ed amps, before discount, its 565 shipped
knock 35 bucks off the .1, and im not sure that they do this ofr the .2 but i would imagine so and youre down to 530. for double the sub power, at least. that ppi amp is not even 500 watts, cea compliant to 185.
so for 200 bucks you get over twice the power, 3 times the warranty, higher resale bc the warranty transfers, etc etc

edit:not sure you can do the package deal this way but according to their website 480 for nine.1 and nine.2. if y ou really feel you need 200x2 then get the .2x for only another 40 bucks

I will be running either the JL ZR series or Focal K2P, I have heard them running with the JL 300x2 amp and they sounded underpowered at high volumes. I did notice the CEA ratings on the PPI amps, which is why I chose to go with the highest wattage they offered (or pretty close). They are brand new from their factory, just at employee cost. They are not refurbed and carry the same warranty as purchased from any retail store. There just happens to be a significant markup on them, like all other products and vendors, so I am just cutting out the middle man and then some.

I do not agree that eD, Arc, Zapco, etc... offer more true power ratings and perhaps cleaner sounds overall, I am just wondering if it is truly worth the cost differential. I really have no budget for the product (just want to keep it within reason), but do prefer not to spend more than necessary for minimal gains.

well if you cna get the power you need and get it cheap then go for it
personally an amp is one thing tha tneeds to be high quality
like i said i dont really know anything about ppi, just what the site offered for specs
im assuming that you know the zr's are rated for 85 watts, maybe what you heard was the speaker being overpowered

I totally agree that the amp should be of the highest quality one can afford...unlike speakers... an amp is going to sound the same no matter what. Speakers will sound differently based on install.

True, and the new PPI amps aren't as good as the old ones but they aren't total crap.
