Default 8" Sub in enclosure or Basslink?

I need a sub for the stock location. I can't decide whether to go with a custom enclosure with 8" (or maybe 10") sub or an Infinity basslink. I am looking for tight bass, not too boomy, but something that will keep pace with 75w RMS up front.

What 8's should I look at? Is there a 10 that will fit in there in a custom box (what dimensions?).

Thoughts??

This will fit perfectly right behind the driver's seat.

Default Say No to Basslink!!

Don't do a Basslink. I had one in my Passat and it blew! In both ways!!

It lasted about 3 days and the amp burned up. I took it apart and inside it had an amplifier that looks like what you would find in a cheezy computer speaker subwoofer system

The woofer was really cheap looking too with a small magnet and cheap thin steel basket. Quality wise, Basslinks are chinese made garbage!! I think they sound horrible, they have no depth, just boom. There is a lot of mechanical noise coming from them.

I swapped it out with a new unit and this one held up a lot better but I had a hard time getting it to sound tight and clean. IMHO They are really boomy sounding. I ended up ripping it out and selling it on e-bay.

You would get way better SQ and output out of a nice JL 8" sub and a good quality 150 watt or better amp.

thats what i wanted to do but i always read posts about people saying there isnt enough free air for a normal sub. does JL even make free air subs?
if anyone has pictures or setups that involve stock location subs can they post them or lead us to a previous link we cant find.

Thumbs up

I went with the basslink with woofer mounted upwards in the stock location. Fitting was a PITA. Had to buy a dremmel to drill the holes because my drill wouldn't fit. It was worse than feeding new speaker cables to the doors (not really ).

I'm am very pleased with the result though. Clean strong bass in the car, but not obnoxious from the outside. And no rattles so far. I covered the entire area in alphalt flashing from home depot at $8 a roll! (the cheap man's dynamat). I used the same stuff to cover the doors after my Infinity component install and it seems to work great.

Thanks for the recommendations all.

Hey look - there really aren't very many easy installations in a 350Z. But I did go with the Infinity BassLink about a month after I took delivery in 2003. The factory BOSE system was (and still is) a bad joke. PERIOD!

I mounted it behind the driver's seat. Once you remove the useless spot welded Nissan "L" brackets - you suspend the BassLink inside that cavity. The bass is very clean sounding an NOT over bearing. BUT - to each his own when it come s to enduring some mega low frequency decibels. I personally enjoy keeping my good hearing.
