does it come on when you throw it in reverse or do you have to switch it manually each time?

If the head unit (or whatever interface you view through) has an input for sensing the backup light power (or similar) then yes, it will switch automatically.

Of course, it would be easy enough to create the circuit to do so in the absence of a manufactured solution.

It should be fine because the ACIV-Z1 takes a RCA input.

I installed mine this weekend along with my new AVIC-Z1 and it works great but there are a few issues that should be noted:

The plate is plastic, not metal. "Metal finish" does not mean metal as I assumed.

The "chrome" plastic looks horrible. Like plasticey fake chorme... and I don't even like real chrome.

You can't install this camera without taking your bumper off or maybe if you have a small child that you can shove up in there because I couldn't reach the back of the bolts.

The plate holder is designed so that you need to be able to get to the back of the plate holder, you can't just screw in the bolts. This is good in a way because this keep people from stealing your expensive new camera/plate cover. I guess you COULD just use round headed screws that will fit inside the hex bolt depression in the front of the plate but then anyone can just unscrew it.

Overall though I like the thing. I wish I had known about the black one because I'm just going to paint mine black so it would have been better to have it made of black plastic.

i installed mine this past friday and i must say, initially i tried to install it by taking the bumper off but stopped at the stupid white locks on the corners...so i didnt damage the clips or anything.

i then went to autozone and bought some license plate screws with special key lock that worked out perfectly for this. once i had these install took less than 1 hour. i got the black "metal" frame. works like a charm although i couldnt decide how i wanted to wire it up, so for now i just have it plugged into one of my video inputs on my lcd. it's always on and i can just switch that video input when i want to use it. i did wire it to come on when the car is turned on though.
