Question Factory Nav DVD Question

Does anyone know what the procedure is for updating the maps of the navigation. By my house there are a few roads that have changed since I got my car and I was wondering how this gets updated. Does Nissan send you a updated DVD automatically? Do you have to call them and order one? Does it cost anything or are annual updated included in the cost of the Nav upgrade? How often do new DVD's come out? Does anyone know how all this works?

I think what you got is all you will get. I believe that updates can be purchased through Nissan. I would like to get one as well, as my neighborhood is not showing up on the map either. If the cost is outrageous (I heard close to $150), maybe we can find a few insterested to share the cost--I can duplicate it, providing there are no legal implications.

Hey...

Everyone's opinion of what is legal or not is different, it all comes down to a morality issue. I guess my morals are somewhat low...

Anyways, I thought there might be a few responses to that comment, and even some flaming, but I figured, who cares, I can take it...after all my morals are low, right ?

HEHE

Alright, I'm done. But seriously....think about what you are saying. Do you honestly believe that Nissan would LEGALLY ALLOW you to copy and distribute things they sell for a substantial sum?

I am not condoning piracy, but do what you have to. It just seems a little off kilter to think even for a second that Nissan (or any well-minded business entity, for that matter) would allow for that type of thing.

Check with whoever makes the software...You never know...you might get one for free.

Garmin sent out a free cd with more detailed maps a year after I bought my unit.

The maps are not always kept 'up to date' nor are they extremely accurate....even a new cd does not guarantee your street to show on the map if it's a fairly new street.

OK, forget about it...I never said anything.

You know what...who cares if my neighborhood roads don't show up...I live in the sticks anyways...

Here's a page from the Infinite NAV manual:

DETAILED MAP COVERAGE AREAS (MCA) FOR THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM
This system is designed to help you reach your
destination, and also performs other functions
as outlined in this manual. However, you, the
driver, must use the system safely and prop-erly.
Information concerning road conditions,
traffic signs and the availability of services may
not always be up-to-date. The system is not a
substitute for safe, proper, and legal driving.
Map data covers select metropolitan areas in
the United States.
Map data consists of map DVD-ROM. For in-formation
about map DVD-ROMs, contact an
INFINITI dealer or call the Infiniti Navigation
System help desk at 800-662-6200 for U.S. or
800-361-4792 for CANADA.
Map data includes 2 types of areas: “Detailed
coverage areas” providing all detailed road
data and other areas showing “Main roads
only”.
NOTE:
Detailed map data is not available in
many areas and is generally limited to
select major metropolitan areas.
For information on which metropolitan areas
are in detailed coverage areas, please refer to
the Infiniti Navigation System Software Booklet
(included). When you purchase an updated
map DVD-ROM, a new software booklet will be
provided.
WHEN A GRAY ROAD IS DIS-
PLAYED ON THE MAP
O Route calculation may not be possible when
a destination or the current vehicle location
is near a gray road.
O When setting a destination, the road near
the cross cursor blinks. For gray roads,
however, the road may not blink.
O When you are driving on a gray road after
the vehicle has deviated from the suggested
route during route guidance, automatic re-routing
may not start immediately.
O Route guidance (enlarged view and voice
guidance) may not be done at the intersec-tion
where the road your vehicle is driving
on and a gray road intersect.
O POI information and street names near gray
roads are not contained in the map data.

At least its a possible contact to get an updated DVD-ROm...who knows what they will charge for it, but this is a start. Note the disclaminer about major metropolitan areas...I guess my roads may never be added, so getting a new dvd probably will not benefit me at all...

The upgrade disc for the Pioneer nav system runs about $250 to $300.

I think all the nav data are supplied by the same company, Navtech.

Ouch !

I wonder if newer Z's equiped with the factory nav are being delievered with updated software ??? My guess is that, like most software, the new nav map disks are updated and released on a once a year basis.

Yeah I agree that 250 or 300 is crazy for an update. I understand that some company took the time to record information about the roadways and they need to be paid for their work. However, the licensing fees for the DVD was already paid for by us as part of the navigation upgrade. So, all we really want to do is buy an update from these people as opposed to an entire new license for the software. There has to be some way for us to send back our old DVD's and get an updated one for a more resonable cost because we really don't need to buy an entire new product. It wouldn't be fair for us to pay for an entire new copy when its going to be 2 percent different from what we already own.
