Default Passport 8500 False LASER alarms.. anyone?

okay.. so get this nonsense..

I'm the proud owner of a passport 8500 x50.. the red one in case you care.. the thing has been money, saved me plenty of times, etc etc... yet all of a sudden a couple months ago (conveniently about a month or so after i got my Z) it started giving me false Laser alarms.. they became more and more frequent as time went on.. It happens all the time in low gears when im flooring it (just when i DONT need to have myself thinking some cop is lasering me).. to the point where about 1/2 the time i floor it in first/second gear, once it hits higher rpms the laser alarm just goes off.. which if anyone is farmiliar with the x50, its a ridiculously LOUD and annoying alarm..

So i called passport.. they said that some cars rpm ranges interfere with the laser filter??? and that id have to send it in, and get charged 59.95, in order to "Refilter the Laser".. sounds pretty bs'ey to me. Anyone ever have this issue and know of a fix or have it resolved somehow??

Thanks for the help!

DUDE the same thing happened to me!! Your car battery may be on the way out.. At the time, I tried everything to fix the 8500 x50 including sending it into Escort.. turns out after i replaced my car battery, everything was fine.. no more annoying Laser falses..

you might also want to put one of those ferrite chokes on the wire coming into the detector..

I don't think it is a common problem.. mine has been 100% fine once I replaced the dying battery...

Default V1

My V1 is set off by my Dad's headlights all the time. He has an FX45. It also might have something to do with the laser guided cruise control. LED lights, lasers, there are tons of things that radar detectors might be fooled by.

I think it happens to both V1 and Passports. On my Passport gen1 my laser will go off if I point it at my navi and so does another members who also has a V1 and same Eclipse navi. His however is installed on the back and it always points at the navi so he had to turn off the laser.

hmm.. i guess i'll have to give my battery a test... and what do you guys mean by pointing it at the navi?? i do have the stock navi system, but the detector is mounted on the lower dashboard, definitely pointing out straight.. is there some navi related crap in the engine bay i dont know about?? haha... anyway, ya, that battery would i guess make the most sense considering this is a problem that happened once in a blue moon and has now gotten worse and worse.. guess it was that day i had a 6 hour party with the only source of music being the z's stereo haha..

I'm not sure about the stock navi but everytime I reattach my navi and point it at the screen it goes off.

My Passport was fine for over a year until one day it started going nuts on me.. False laser... constant.. very annoying.. Car battery went two months later... Totally dead... unrecoverable.. was an Optima too! Turns out I installed my sirius radio module wrong and it drained my battery bad (manual said tap battery source when ignition was actually needed ).. battery never recovered.. but all the while i sent the Passport into get fixed and did all kinds of crap!! only thing that solved it was a new battery..

geeze.. unreal... the only thing i can really think of is that i had a stereo shop directly wire the passport into the ignition.. hope that didnt cause any problems or anything.. but ya, i'll have to keep an eye on my battery's charge over the near future to see if its dying as opposed to sending the detector off to passport and paying all kinds of needless money!

I've only had the laser go off twice in a year, and scared the crap out of me both times. You get used to the little farts that it lets out here and there, but all of a sudden, like a telephone ring...BRRRRRRRRIIIIIINNNNGGGG! Time to change the shorts.

We get false laser on the 8500 X50 (wife's) and the Solo 2. It happens as I pass truckers and when the sun is at certain angles as well. As for the sun comment, there would not be a vehicle, aircraft, SATCOM, or cellphone tower for 50 miles. The only thing that would stop it is when I took it out of the window.

my x50 does it if i use wipers with spray.... and when i adjust side mirrors. it's weird. mine's hardwired to the rear view mirror source.

Some have reported the LED tail lights in some cars will set their laser detectors off. With the navigation screen I'm thinking it's picking up some harmonic of the refresh rate rather than some electro-magnetic radiation from it. I know my threat well enough that I know the city I live in doesn't run lasers. I don't think the CHiP's use them either ... or if they do, not very often from San Diego to Riverside to Las Vegas. I get plenty of radar warnings so the cops might be getting enough tickets that way that they don't switch over to laser.

I've had the X50 in blue for about 2 years, never had any false laser alerts. Only when I leave the airport always in the same spot. I turned the X band off a long time ago, Cops don't use that band at all anymore. I did have some problems with my mine about the second summer of having it, it would freeze up alot, more and more frequent as time went on, So I went to Best Buy, bought a new one, and then returned it with my old one in the box. Cant beat the Hustle!!
