Default Radar Detectors

I think its time I get one. I don't have $500 to spend for a Passport, but what do you all recommend for $200 or less? Yes, I know its not as good as the more expensive ones, but I haven't really got the funds for more atm. Ideas?

I got a Passport Solo S2 for $230 on ebay. It is well worth the money. Paid for itself the first day!

I have a Cobra and works fine. It is sometimes annoying because it has the x alert vocally, but better than nothing. The problem is that x bands are everywhere so its always alerting.

Just realize that radars help, but you have to be really focused because it beeps when the cops are very near. Not much time to slow down.

Indeed streetracer. The detector is not my get out of jail free card. I generally don't drive that fast, never cruise over 75 or so. But thats enough to get you a ticket. And I know these things don't do anything at 120.

Depends hugely on the speed detection technology being used and on many other factors; the quality of detector, the external environment, etc. etc.

With instant-on or laser pointed straight at you, no radar, regardless of price, will provide advance warning. With technologies like K, Ka, a good detector will provide plenty of advance warning.

never buy the solo s2 it's the worst **** ever made had 1 and it went all the time for no apparant reason even in the middle of a dead road i think it detects like cell phones or something.

Get a valentine one either a new one or a old one off ebay, when you have some more cash upgrade it to the current version via valentines trade in program.

I have to disagree, I'm on my 2nd S2 (the first was stolen). The only problem I have with false alrms is near the airport (laser). It has saved me countless times and I love the freedom of battery operation. With an extra windshield mount, moving it betw 2 vehicles is a breeze...

Stay away from the solo, I had the Solo 2 as well untill I started to read in some of the forums how it works, sold that sucker fast!!!! and bought a Valentine..........the best, end of story!
Getting back to the solo, its designed for long battery life and how it achieves this is by giong to sleep, so its not even detecting all the time.
It wakes up every now and then, scans the area and goes back into sleep mode...F@#$ that!

Don't waste your money on an escort detector.

The Valentine 1 "locator" is the best buy, and worth every penny. I wouldn't imagine having anything without the arrows.

Can't afford the Valentine. I ordered a Bel RX65 for $230 shipped last night. Not bad considering everywhere they retal for way over $300.

your detector can be your get out of jail free card, i have the passport 8500 cost me about 300 dollars and has saved me several times at about 110 MPH

no detectors will save you from laser, but if you get caught by laser your a total idiot, they will have to be in plain site parallel with the road and rather close to get you with laser (laser jammers are legal though)

a cobra or some cheapo detector will be ok if all your going to do is cruise around a city, but if your going to speed on a highway at all spend the extra cash

this is coming from someone who has owned oth the cheapo and the expensive one, i got 3 tickets while i owned the cobra (it did save me from 3 or 4) i speed worse now w/ the passport and have not recieved one ticket

Thanks for reminding me of the sh*tiness of my cobra radar. I sort of figured myself for the annoyance factor being pretty high. Its the first I've had and it was a gift from the wife. I will make sure my second one will be better.

BTW, only one ticket so far. It was the one time I removed the radar to use it on another car. Murphys law, I guess.

do you speed on the highway a lot?

its not that its ****ty so much that the passport and other 300$ detectors are better

i had that cobra for 2 years, i think im going on one with my passport, its just that the sensitivity is so much higher with the passport it really saves you on the highway

around town with the cobra the sensitivity was fine, it would go off and id see the cop in a mile, w/ the passport it goes off and a lot of the times i never even see the cop (probably on some sidestreet somewhere) (not false alarms were talkign Ka)

and on the highway depending on how the cop is parked you can get a good 3-30 seconds extra warning which really saves your ***

a friend of mine suggested a try them out at the same time, but i still havent because i hardwire my detectors and it would be a pain in the *** just for a test, plus cobras are leaky as hell and it would just set off my passport anyway
