With two drivers you need much less power to do the same amount of work. As long as you push the drivers to their RMS with clean power, how much distortion could you possibly have, considering that you tune the system correctly? There's always going to be distortion in any system, but that doesn't mean that it will be audible, am I correct?
so does this mean less power from the Amp is needed with 2 subs, therefore less power is drawn from the 12v DC car battery? just kind of guessing on the logic here as I also have the same question as the subject of this thread, whether to get one 12" or two 10" subs? and the above seem to be making a good point, but I'm a complete novice.
Tricky question ... it is kind of based on the amp's topology, the resistance fo the subs, and how you wire them.
Supposedly JL amps will produce the same amount of power regardless of the input voltage (of course it has to be 11.5-14.4). So technically you oculd run a voltage regulator to limit voltage input to the amp to keep more in the battery though God knows why you would.
Did I ever use all of the power ... well ... probably not, but the headroom was there. I'm not an SPL freak .. so it only got loud when I was out of the car for demo-ing it. The Pioneer subs couldn't handle all of the power anyways.
The only time I caution people about hi-power amp in the Z is when they run that Audiobahn stuff.
