You don't need to change your speakers but it is ideal when you get a nice head unit to exploit the quailty of the new deck. Like all audio systems in a car or home, your system is only as good as your weakest link between the source (receiver or HU), connections (cables) and your output (speakers)

I changed out the subwoofer in the stock position - deeper cleaner base but no where enough base. I ended up with an amplifier, a Zenclosure, and a pair of 10" woofers.

Then I installed a Pionner AVIC N2 and changed out the front speakers. I had to bypass the Bose four channel amplifier to allow the Pioneer drive the speakers directly. Much much better. The 22 watts of the headend drove the front speakers to a level loud enough for most.

Bypassing the Bose amplifier was temporary as I later ran my own wires. Here's a chart I made to aid me in connecting the wires up.

I just connected the line-level cables to the speaker level wires and then connected the Pioneer to the old line-level wires and drove the speakers directly by-passing the Bose amp.

So why by-pass the Bose amplifier? The subwoofer amplifier might be good for 8-12 watts being generous.

The four channel amplifer is probably rated about the same wattage. I have no idea how Nissan or Bose came up with the wattage they claim. I opened the four channel amplifier open to see what the output transistors were and cross them to see what their outputs really were. I come to find out that there are no output power transistors - just little IC chips.

same thing I was going to say, bypass the bose amp. The "easiest" way to do it is to run new wires to the speakers. That way you are not cutting wires in case you want to trade/sale the car in the future.

The subwoofer amplifier is located inboard toward the centerline from the subwoofer itself mounted right next to it.
The four channel amplifier is located on the driver's side in the trunk right below the antenna.
if i just get the head unit and the Ipod hook up wire....would the installer still have to cut the wire to the Bose amp? i really dont know much about this...sorry if i sound silly asking weird questions....
